Are you a webmaster that has Made It? Pic

This is not a "how do you get traffic post", but regardless I'm sure this will be flame bait or whatever...

See...I'm a struggling webmaster that's attempted a few different sites that's never quite made it over the traffic hump. I get really into working and making my sites, but I never am able to get any hits. I've paid for hits, I've done link exchanges, I've submitted, pinged and tried to spread my sites by words of mouth, but I'm always struggling to keep even a constant 40 people a day.
So I'm just curious, maybe not for tips on how to make traffic but how do I stop from being broken by my lack of activity? I mean, I understand it can take a long time before I see any hits...but how do most of you handle that?

How do the lot of you look at stats like..
http://www.stopliving.com/media/webhelp.jpg

and keep on trucking? really low stats like this suck to deal with on a constant basis.
like I've mentioned before, the site is relatively new, but it's been pretty much the status quo for most of my pages. any insight from you guys who've worked your way to the top would be appreciated.

noone? alright then.

JOKER 03-23-2005 06:09 PM

First of all stop using Sextracker and make use of your own serverlogs.

Analyze those for real stats (use awstats or similiar) and learn how to make people come back, give them a reason.

If your site is not special, why should they come back?

Try to visit your site as a 'surfer' and see what they see, then ask yourself
if you'd check back again tomorrow.

Simple advice, yet effective.

What kind of sites do you run?

Flu 03-23-2005 06:12 PM

I'm the assistant web designer for a pay site that I'm not going to talk about here. I've also run TGPs which I've quit, a niche link site that I quit. An insult site that blew up on me. and this site which I guess is a link/blog site.

i have server stats, but they're updated once a day.

JOKER 03-23-2005 06:15 PM

Impatient or why do you quit everything ?

Just visited your site and I could not see anything that would make me come back... but I'm not your average surfer either.

squizzel 03-23-2005 06:17 PM

submit to linkdumps, that will get u a steady 1k (probs much more) after 1 week of work submitting shit to dumps and forums...

Flu 03-23-2005 06:20 PM

I get discouraged when I put effort into building something and the opinion from other people is "i cant find one thing that would make me ever want to come back"

i mean, what do you have that would make people want to come back that so different from the rest of the internet? theres nothing on my page that peaks any interest what so ever?

Thats good advice... if you have your limp cock , and a soggy tissue in your hand at the end of building a site then you will be half way to making some money

Take no offense, like I mentioned I'm not your average surfer :Oh crap

I just don't see your site stand out of other sites that float around.

Make the 'test' damian2001 mentioned and see what it does for you.

Do you have a fetish, a niche you love?

Try to make a site dedicated to that, be addicted to your site.
Chances are some other surfers will be as well.

I don't mean to bash you or your site by any means.
You asked for advice, I tell you what comes to mind without sweet-talk.

Flu 03-23-2005 06:31 PM

Hmmm, working towards the niche is probably a great idea.

JOKER 03-23-2005 06:31 PM

25 GB per day?

Do you host a lot of movies?

Do you have a virtual account or a dedicated server?

Flu 03-23-2005 06:33 PM

I have a virtual account. I've hosted 2 movies on my site, that have gotten about 3k to 4k hits a day.

JOKER 03-23-2005 06:52 PM

Host those movies within your site - embed them within html.

Use those hits to gain potential bookmarkers, good way of getting traffic.

Make a clean page with the movie in the middle and good visible links
to your main-page plus bookmark and send-to-a-friend links.

Kevsh 03-23-2005 08:28 PM

Add some more pages to your site, Google loves sites with lots of content. I only see about 9 pages in Google's index.

To help retain surfers, perhaps not feature the text links so prominently, move them to the side and make your photos the center of attention.

Can you add a referrer script so that sites that link to you are listed?

On a side note, what does a gun in the logo and "Stop Living" have to do with the content of the site? And on that topic, what is the main niche of your site? It needs a consistent theme which will ultimately help target surfers and help in Google's SERPs.

Sorry if this wasn't answering your original questions exactly, but I always believe you should make a site as good as possible and *then* promote like mad. No use wasting hits.

There's a way to change the .conf file of awstats so that you can manually update whenever you feel the need.

Flu, hit me up on ICQ or email me, I may have a solution for you. Email is info AT webmasterlabor DOT com

Flu 03-24-2005 01:05 AM

well, I understand that my site needs more focus. and I guess the theme and the url don't match. and I guess I'm not targeted enough, but that wasnt my question.

see huge porn sites were made out of URLS like persian kitty and stile project and orsm.

my question was...how do you deal with no traffic, until the traffic comes. or does traffic just come instantly?
