Soft boxes or shoot through umbrellas?

Why?

Soft boxes.

Just more area of even coverage. I have a 6 ft box and a 4ft. Thats all you need really.

I prefer soft boxes I use three of them .

more control of the light spread with SB's

most definately soft boxes with strobes...of course depends on how soft you want the light.

umbrellas are a back-up on location if you need softer look - not for primary studio

If you're going to shoot video too, go with steady on lights. Get cool ones, otherwise invest in quiet fans as well, because it gets hot as hell with hot video lights on a set.

Nothing more annoying than strobe lights flashing if you are shooting video (well, except for friggin' cell phones going off - no matter how many times you tell people to turn them off).
