What screen resolution are people using nowdays?

Back in the days when I started creating websites I know the most used one was 800x600. Times have changed. 17" LCDs are the new thing right now and those work on 1280x1024. Many 17" CRTs work on 1024x768. 15" is obsolete.

Yet I don't know exact numbers of the share each resolution has nowdays.

Do any of you have the numbers?

Note: I don't have any JS counters. Paycounter doesn't show shit.

1024x is the most popular according to my stats.

McSpike 03-22-2005 03:13 PM

I mean what visitors of your sites use, not what you use.

McSpike 03-22-2005 03:13 PM

can you share percentage numbers? that would provide the whole picture.

MandyBlake 03-22-2005 03:14 PM

i still think 800x600 is the most used....but 1024x768 is catching up.

Resolution:
46% 1024x768
40% 800x600
7% 1280x1024
7% 1152x864

My stats anyway.

TexasDreams 03-22-2005 03:40 PM

48.82% - 1024x768
24.73% - 800x600
15.27% - 1280x1024
10.11% - Unknown
01.08% - 1152x884

My stats

What matters more is the size of their browser window, not the size of their screen. I'm running at 1600x1200, but don't keep my browser maximized. I have my browser at around 800 pixels wide, which is perfect for most sites, and lets me see my desktop icons and instant messaging programs. The "leaderboard" banner size is 728x90 for a good reason.

My members are about 50/50 1024x768 and 800x600, with a few rebels surfing at the higher res's and a few people on webtv and such.

Remember not to make your design take up the ENTIRE real estate of the screen, though. I find nothing more annoying. I like to have trillian down the side and tabs and toolbars in my browser, so the usable space is more like 800x600 even though I'm running at 1024x768. I hate scrolling.

squizzel 03-22-2005 03:55 PM

i think 1024 is used by anyone who has any experience with a computer. Until MS sets the default res at 1024 nothing will change.

McSpike 03-22-2005 06:34 PM

that many still on 800x600? fuck that's obsolete. I am on 1280x1024 and never going back. Can't remember when I dumped 800x600. geeez...

I'll have to keep my site at 760... geeez....

spentrent 03-22-2005 06:38 PM

Don't alienate any potential customers. Design for 800x600 and go EASY on the CSS.

I think people using lynx can be safely ignored, however ;).

1280x1024 is only for real computer nerds who like to show off the clean look it gives the desktop.... shit is very fucking small and it looks like crap. 1024x768 is the way to go!

PHPdude 03-22-2005 07:41 PM

800x600 remains to be the most popular nowadays.

Spunky 03-22-2005 08:24 PM

800x600 ...I don't know how people can see anything that small with the higher resolutions

JD 03-22-2005 09:20 PM

1152x864

looks like crap? what are you using 15" crap? I was on 1024x768 17" not long ago and when you switch to 1280x1024 19" you'll never want to go back.

so this is not for nerds, this is the future. LCDs are the future and no one is buying 15" LCDs today. they barely exist. everyone's buying 17 or 19. and 17 inchers work on 1280x1024 (which is too small for that screen size unfortunately) so I took 19 incher.

800x600, lol, give me a break.

yet I see people still use it way too much so I'll build the site with that in mind.
