OK you could set up an action to do this very quickly.
Set your selection size to what you want your thumb to be. (100*100 etc.)
Create an action that does image>crop then file> save for web. assign a shortcut key to the action. Once done just open your pic, click in the image, then hit shortcut key for action.
You'll get the best results using PS. It may take a second or so more but it shouldn't doing it the way I listed above.
