God I love my health insurance!

I had my gallbladder removed in an outpatient surgery at a local hospital here.
I received a bill from the hospital in the mail yesterday with a balance of $5501.88
I called my insurance company and they said they just received the bill too and that they would pay their part within 15 business days and then the hospital would send me a bill for the remainder.
I asked how much I would owe and she said $100.

Not bad for a surgery!
I love my insurance company!!!

Honez 03-22-2005 12:19 PM

Damn! I want insurance like that!

Sosa 03-22-2005 12:28 PM

adamneve 03-22-2005 12:28 PM

steadfast 03-22-2005 12:30 PM

MandyBlake 03-22-2005 12:42 PM

I pay $189/month. They just went up in January.
I have Kaiser Permanente.

Furious_Female 03-22-2005 12:47 PM

Furious_Female 03-22-2005 12:48 PM

yup.
When I first got it over 5 years ago it was around $105.
I rarely go to the doctor for anything. Just my annual ob/gyn exam, but it was nice to have when I had to get this surgery.
I couldn't imagine having to pay that out of my pocket.

TORTOISE 03-22-2005 12:53 PM

I really doubt that,

France, Austria
Switzerland, Spain, Belgium
Germany
Netherlands

Would be a better decision.

In the Southeast, BCBS insurance is not that expensive for a single plan. It's not too bad for the family deal, either.

WebTitan 03-22-2005 02:17 PM

that would have cost me $5 with my new insurance. The wife just got a great job at the university here. ;)

I have Kaiser Permanente.

Through Kaiser ours is $260/month each. Started around your price 3 years ago. I have Multiple Sclerosis, and just my main medicine alone is $1800 a month. I get it for $25. I get MRI's on a yearly basis, and just pay the $15 doctors visit for them. I've been very happy with Kaiser.

gangbangjoe 03-22-2005 02:21 PM

this is the only positive thing about germany...

if you need your insurance they will pay

If you think it costs you nothing you're living in a dream world. Our public health care system wastes money hand over foot here in Canada, and you're most likely paying WAY more than an insured person living in the US.

It's just you can't put a value on it.

Well, depends on how old you are and what coverage you have :winkwink: I pay $334 a month for 43 yo female, $1K deductible, $25 doctor visits and prescrips.

I think I was paying $112 for my son at 21 for the same coverage.

But I get to go to MY doctors and hospitals so it's better than Kaiser for me personally :)

Holy hell. I still have it through my ex's businesses so it costs me basically nothing, but before I knew if I could keep it with him I checked about a single plan for me and it was around $160-$170. I think it was a $500 deductible.

sonofsam 03-22-2005 02:36 PM

150/month on health insurance? that fucking sucks...
its nice livin in canada... oh wait.. uhh i mean... ohhhhh my... its so horrible up here.. none of u guys should move here :)

As I posted above, if you think you're paying less than that by living here in Canada then you're not looking hard enough. :winkwink:

I'd WELCOME $150/month for coverage and service like they get instead of wasting money year after year into a failing public health care system.

Oh, I looked hard and long at Kaiser. But I wouldn't be able to go to any of my doctors and would have to pay out of network for any hospital w/in 50 miles of my house (and this was when I lived in the burbs).

The $1000 isn't in place for doctor visits, tests, prescriptions or ER visits. In 5 years, I haven't spent one penny towards the deductible and that's with 4 or so prescriptions a month, 2 doctor visits a year, ob/gyn once a year, mammograms. etc.

I had a huge spreadsheet looking at every possibility, about 8 different companies and a few professional organizations and for ME, BCBS was the best option :)

V_RocKs 03-22-2005 06:05 PM

My girlfriend and her kids have Kaiser. Everyone talked shit about it when I went to get my own so I got it through the National blah blah of self employed (idiots)... I pay $160 a month and I don't get squat for insurance. I used to work for Stater Bros. Markets where I got head to toe for 100% free... I remember thinking the sky was falling when they instituted a $10 copay for office visits and a $5 for medications. How dare they!

Well... My colar bone broke. At the time I didn't make as much as I do now. It had broken before so I basically set it myself and all of that jazz... Had I went in, my portion was going to be $500 to the hospital and $175 to the doctor. Fuck them.

So my GF and her kids have Kaiser through her ex-oldman. He pays $550 for the whole familiy which at the time I thought was outrageous. In the last 2 years her 15 year old daughter broke her wrist playing softball ($45 copay), popped her knee out requiring MRI/x-rays and 3 visits to a specialist ($100 in copays) and then sprained her ankel ($25 copay). Her 13 year old daughter broke her nose playing softball and they reset it, then had her come back 2 months later and did plastic surgery to remove the bump ($80 copay), she had her appendix taken out ($120 copay). Her exhusband had a hernia fixed ($100 copay), the end of one of his fingers stiched back on when he cut it off with a ban saw ($120 copay) and his jaw wired from a bar fight ($80 copay). My GF is made of rocks.. she doesn't go the doctor...

Me and her ex decided to add up the bills and figure out the costs for my insurance with the same problems. My insurance would be the same monthly for a family of four (although they wouldn't cover my GF for free seeing as how they are divorced, but being as it is, the costs per month are made even). But the copay on all of this shit for my insurance would have hit a little over $5000! He paid $670!

Anyone who says Kaiser sucks doesn't know the true story about health insurance outside of a company paid policy. Insurance has went to shit!

Anyone who says Kaiser sucks doesn't know the true story about health insurance outside of a company paid policy. Insurance has went to shit!

That's odd because Kaiser was recommended to me again. I like doubling up on insurance and my sister, a top nurse, gave me the real deal on medical bills and insurance. I won't go into it here as it's too long, but in my case I've never been sick. No broken bones, sprains etc. Just stitches and bruises. You figure 30 years of martial arts and all I've gotten is zilch as far as injuries go. Swordfighting too. So I have no medical history nor pre-existing conditions. Only in the past few years have I ever been ill and it all boiled down to stress from pollution here in Cali!! Didn't know pollution could fuck you up so bad!

So with me, my rates are so low it's stupid. I can walk to Kaiser's main hospitals and they had a lady there at the desk one day with one bad fucking attitude so I turned Kaiser down for me and my crew. Even the EMTs and fire dept. bitched about this lady's attitude. Great way to lose customers. So recently another LAFD pal told me what her problem was and still suggested Kaiser. I'll look into it again this week and make a final decision.
