Army raises enlistment age for reservists to 39

WASHINGTON (Reuters) -- The U.S. Army, stung by recruiting shortfalls caused by the Iraq war, has raised the maximum age for new recruits for the part-time Army Reserve and National Guard by five years to 39, officials said Monday.

HERES THE KICKER:

Recruiters say the Iraq war is making military service a harder sell, and the Army has added recruiters and financial incentives for enlistment.

The Army National Guard missed its recruiting goal for the 2004 fiscal year and trails its year-to-date 2005 targets. The Army Reserve missed January and February goals and is lagging its target for 2005. The regular Army missed its target for February and trails its annual goal.

"Obviously, this decision is being made partly in response to the personnel shortfalls caused by the war in Iraq," said defense analyst Loren Thompson of the Lexington Institute.

doubt i draft...most likely a 'terroist' will strike and everybody will be gung ho once again...remember after 9/11 everybody was enlisting :1orglaugh fucking sheeple

well they keep promising that the draft will never happen.. and so far they kept their word. What is happening now is they are stopping soldiers from coming home and increasing ages for reservists... not sure whats next since manpower is getting pretty slim over there and with other countries backing away from helping - america has to step up its forces - but with who???

When they offer enough incentives, I'll sign up ...
Like a guaranteed "coming home" date they don't keep pushing back

Wow 39 that's insane......I don't know many 39 year olds that could make it through boot camp.

And then you can't age discriminate if the guy wants to serve 20 years to get retirement benefits so he'd be 59 before you could kick him out.

When I enlisted many moons ago the max age for reservists coming in was 32...it was lower than that for active duty.

It is going to be interesting to see what happens next. I don't know if changing the age limit is going to help that much.

Seems to me that they're going to have to invade some nicer places if they want people to go. Who wants to go to some shit hole like Iraq.......what they need to do is invade Tahiti :1orglaugh

Yeah, Word on the street here on base and other bases is the draft.. but who knows.... Right now they are looking for couple thousand new recruiters... They are taking volunteer's from my unit and other units on base right now to fill this slot, 4 years non deployable status... Anyways they are VERY desperate for people signing up, and it's not happening so draft is looking more and more possible..
