Do You Feel That The Patriot Act Violates Your Civil Liberties?

Do You Feel That The Patriot Act Violates Your Civil Liberties? It seems to be making alot of folks seriosuly paranoid . Do you feel that this fear is justified. Do you think they would use this law to bust small time criminals or is it mainly focused towards Career criminals and terrorists?

reynold 03-22-2005 12:17 AM

I think they're gonna use it to bust small time criminals.

Dildozer 03-22-2005 12:18 AM

I think they'll abuse it eventually when it fits their needs

colpanic 03-22-2005 12:19 AM

I do think it violates everyones civil liberties pretty blatantly.

It gives the government the ability to watch anyone for anything they want with no recourse. While it doesn't affect me personally, it sure gives flashbacks to the red scare.

Not to mention their ability to detain anyone without dealing with any of the normal rights a citizen has, and secret courts.. It pretty much violates all the basic constitutional rights if they decide you might want to do something.

Are they going to use it to bust small time thieves and drug dealers? Not anytime soon, but most likely because it would be overwhelmingly hard to do.

But, your freedom of speech is gone.

:2 cents:

Worse.

It redefines them in such a way that makes it possible for them to be violated without being "violated".

you should read something other than left wing scare rags so you don't look so stupid when you post.

Barefootsies 03-22-2005 07:29 AM

Yes.

There have already been a handful of cases in Arizona, and some other southern states where they have used it in handling domestic matters.

It's a broad sword and is too generic or undefined. It needs to be limited to the extent it goes after the right people/crimes/jurisdictions, and not the wrong.

Much like they need to revamp airport security to do the same.

The sad fact is most people are too scared by the media, too ignorant, or too lazy to understand the slippery slope of legislation like this. They unfortunately will never catch on until we are a police state.

It's about time people wake up and realize we are not built, or meant to live forever. If someone is THAT commited to do whatever it is they want to do, they are going to be able to do it and it's only a matter of time. They can just as easily jump in a car or truck loaded with whatever, run a gate, and drive it into all this shit we are worried about protecting. Two security guards jumping out of the way are not going to stop them. Anymore than some crazed person with an AK-47 and a born to lose tattoo in your local post office.

Shit happens. Get over it.

Why not post up what you know that disputes what he said instead of trying to belittle someone? Just a thought...

when someone posts lies, its more fun to belittle them.

you kids take things for fact when some other kid posts it in a thread.
those aren't facts.

MandyBlake 03-22-2005 07:54 AM

yes it does.

Lara 03-22-2005 07:58 AM

Yes, it definitely does.

Cassie 03-22-2005 08:02 AM

if you're not doing anything wrong, then what do you have to fear?

I am 30 so I am no kid. I just always see you post about how wrong people on the left are and about how they get all of their "facts" from leftwing rags and this and that. I don't often see you post why they are wrong. I just wanted to hear another side of it that was all...

...see unlike many people, some of us are willing to hear it from both sides. I have read alot of the patriot act and I think it could possibly grant the government a little too much freedom if they were to go nuts with it. That is unless I interpreted the actual document wrong which could be the case but I don't think so. As far as lies go, it's already started with the unions and homeland security. All I have to do is talk to my father to know that because he's experiencing it first hand as a union leader, not sitting at some keyboard living his life online like many people who claim to know what the deal is. The government is using blackball tactics against unions in naval shipyards today and putting their reasonings and excuses under the "national security" or "patriot act" umbrella.

I can't say that I know for a fact what all the government is up to but something fishy is going on. I can feel it in my bones.

That's true but it's a slippery slope.

I look stupid? Ok then genius, explain where i'm wrong. How does holding someone without charges or access to an attorney not violate their constitutional rights?

I'm hardly left wing, but I'd like to hear what a right wing jizz bag thinks.

Well when it was pushed through as a anti terrorist bill. Then the first case it was used on was against Paypal, for doing processing for online gambling sites... Well what do you think?

mardigras 03-23-2005 07:21 PM

Don't forget that the Patriot act was used to close down a titty bar :upsidedow

I don't feel the Patriot Act has violated my civil liberties... yet... as far as I know... but I know the wording is there if someone was so inclined. :Oh crap

MattO 03-23-2005 07:31 PM

Don't worry,
IT CAN'T HAPPEN HERE

So you would have no problem with the government putting cameras in your house? After all, you're not doing anything wrong, you have nothing to hide.

More than anything it looks like a joke to me. Why bother with all this crap when you can't even secure your borders? And btw, they have already used the patriot act to arrest and charge multiple peaceful dissidents. They may not show it on Fox News, but if you visit right and left wing websites they will provide you with actually cases going down, and if you honestly look into it it is unbelievable what they are getting away with.
