Do Lyrics/Movie Lines Move You Emotionally? Post them Here!

I'm not ashamed to admit that a good song or line in a movie can completely change my emotional state. If I'm driving alone listening to the iPod or the Radio and a good song comes on, it's not unusual that tears will fill my eyes.

Don't laugh, you know it happens to you too.

Some songs get to me because I try to put myself in the author's place. I want to remain naive and believe song writers are artists and not in it only for the money. I want to believe they're relaying a personal experience or freeing some personal demons through their lyrics.

I like to imagine being in their place.

As for music, I listen to everything from Pop to Rap, Country to Opera. It's all good to me, as long as the lyrics are good.

Post a song that moves you. Then explain why the song moves you. Or post lines in a movie that move you (ie: You make me want to be a better man. - who knows what movie that is from and who said it).

Here's my first example. A song that's best known as being performed by country artist Kenny Chesney:

No I ain't had nothing to drink.
I knew thats probably what you'd think
If I dropped by this time of night.
Remember way back when
I promised you I'd drop in
At one of those meetings down at the Y?

Well, they started talkin' 'bout steps you take,
Mistakes you make,
The hearts you break,
And the price you pay.
I almost walked away.

But you could hear a pin drop
When this old man
Stood up and said, "I'm gonna' say it again
Like I do every week,
For those who don't know me."

"It's the simple things in life,
Like the kids at home and a loving wife,
That you miss the most, when you lose control.
And everything you love starts to disappear.
The devil takes your hand and says, 'No fear!
Have another shot... just one more beer.'
Yah, I've been there, and that's why I'm here."

This ole boy stood up in the aisle.
Said he'd been living a life of denial,
And he cried as he talked about wasted years.
I couldn't believe what I heard.
It was my life word for word!
And all of the sudden it was clear...

It's the simple things in life,
Like the kids at home and a loving wife,
That you miss the most when you lose control.
And everything you love starts to disappear.
The devil takes your hand and says, "No fear!
Have another shot... just one more beer."
Yah, I've been there, and that's why I'm here.

I know for us it may be too late,
But it would mean the world to me
If you were there when I stand to say:
"It's the simple things in life,
Like the kids at home and a loving wife,
That you miss the most when you lose control.
And everything you love starts to disappear.
The devil takes your hand and says, 'No fear!
Have another shot... just one more beer.'
Yah, I've been there, that's why I'm here
Oh, I've been there, that's why I'm here."

Why does this song get to me? Because I put myself in the place of the alcoholic in the song: a guy who's lost his family because of his addiction. He's sunk to the bottom. Everyone's given up on him after trying so long. He's finally taken the first step on the road to recovery and, even though he knows he's too late to reconcile with his wife and get his family back, he's there anyway asking if she'd at least go to a meeting with him and witness that he finally realizes what he's done and what he's lost.

Again, what moves you? And why? What do you feel when the song comes on?

I get a little tear in my eye every time at the end of "Babe" when the farmer says "That'll do pig."

On the turning away
By Pink Floyd

" On The turning away
From the pale and downtroden
And the words they say
Which we won't understand
"Don't accept that what's happening
Is just a case of others' suffering
Or you'll find that you're joining in
The turning away"

It's a sin that somehow
Light is changing to shadow
And casting it's shroud
Over all we have known
Unaware how the ranks have grown
Driven on by a heart of stone
We could find that we're all alone

In the dream of the proud
On the wings of the night
As the daytime is stirring
Where the speechless unite
In a silent accord
Using words you will find are strange
And mesmerised as they light the flame
Feel the new wind of change

On the wings of the night
No more turning away
From the weak and the weary
No more turning away
From the coldness inside
Just a world that we all must share
It's not enough just to stand and stare
Is it only a dream that there'll be
No more turning away? "

I know the feeling, allright. One of my friends died of an O.D. This song always reminds me of him. In case you don't know it, it's by Neil Young (album: Harvest).

"Needle And The Damage Done"

I caught you knockin'
at my cellar door
I love you, baby,
can I have some more
Ooh, ooh, the damage done.

I hit the city and
I lost my band
I watched the needle
take another man
Gone, gone, the damage done.

I sing the song
because I love the man
I know that some
of you don't understand
Milk-blood
to keep from running out.

I've seen the needle
and the damage done
A little part of it in everyone
But every junkie's
like a settin' sun.

I was bruised and battered
I couldn't tell what I felt
I was unrecognizable
to myself

Saw my reflection in a window
and didn't know my own face
so brother are you
gonna leave me wasting away
on the streets of Philadelphia

I walked the avenu
till my legs felt like stone
I heard voices of friends
vanished and gone

At night I hear the blood
in my veins
this is black and whispering
as the rain
on the streets of Philadelphia

Ain't no angel gonna greet me
it's just you and I my friend
and my clothes don't fit me no more
I'd walk a thousand miles
just to slip this skin

Night is falling
and I'm lying awake
I can feel myself
fading away

So receive me brother
with your faithless kiss
or will we leave each other
alone like this
on the streets of Philadelphia

Pearl Jam - Last kiss

Where, oh where, can my baby be? the lord took her away from
Me. she?s gone to heaven, so I?ve got to be good. so I can see my baby when i
Leave this world.

We were out on a date in my daddy?s car. we hadn?t driven very far. there in
The road, straight ahead. a car was stalled, the engine was dead.

I couldn?t stop, so I swerved to the right. I?ll never forget the sound that
Night. the screamin tires, the bustin glass. the painful scream that I heard
Last.

Oh where, oh where, can my baby be? the lord took her away from me. she?s gone
To heaven, so I?ve got to be good. so I can see my baby when I leave this world.

When I woke up the rain was pourin down. there were people standin all around.
Something warm flowing through my eyes. but somehow I found my baby that night.
I lifted her head, she looked at me and said. hold me darling, just a little
While. I held her close, I kissed her our last kiss. I found the love that i
Knew I had missed.

Well now she?s gone. even though I hold her tight. I lost my love, my life,
That night.

Oh where, oh where, can my baby be? the lord took her away from me. she?s gone
To heaven, so I?ve got to be good. so I can see my baby when I leave this
World.

Not to hijack the thread, but on a similar note, the music alone can change my mood: e.g. everytime I hear Samuel Barber's 'Adiagio for strings' (in case you don't know it, it's the main theme from 'Platoon'), I'm prone to get a lump in my throat.

Collin Raye, "Love, Me"

I read a note my grandma wrote back in nineteen twenty-three.
Grandpa kept it in his coat, and he showed it once to me. he said,
"Boy, you might not understand, but a long, long time ago,
Grandma's daddy didn't like me none, but I loved your grandma so."
We had this crazy plan to meet and run away together.
Get married in the first town we came to, and live forever.
But nailed to the tree where we were supposed to meet, instead
I found this letter, and this is what it said:
If you get there before I do, don't give up on me.
I'll meet you when my chores are through;
I don't know how long I'll be.
But I'm not gonna let you down, darling wait and see.
And between now and then, till I see you again,
I'll be loving you. Love, me.

I read those words just hours before my grandma passed away,
In the doorway of a church where me and grandpa stopped to pray.
I know I'd never seen him cry in all my fifteen years;
But as he said these words to her, his eyes filled up with tears.
If you get there before I do, don't give up on me.
I'll meet you when my chores are through;
I don't know how long I'll be.
But I'm not gonna let you down, darling wait and see.
And between now and then, till I see you again,
I'll be loving you. Love, me.
Between now and then, till I see you again,
I'll be loving you. Love, me.

Folks, Id like to sing a song about the American Dream
About me, about you
About the way our American hearts beat way down in the bottom of our chests
About that special feeling we get in the cockles of our hearts
Maybe below the cockles,
Maybe in the sub cockle area,
Maybe in the liver, maybe in the kidneys,
Maybe even in the colon, we dont know

Im just a regular Joe, with a regular job
Im your average white, suburbanite slob
I like football and porno and books about war
I got an average house, with a nice hardwood floor
My wife and my job, my kids and my car
My feet on my table, and a Cuban cigar

But sometimes that just aint enough to keep a man like me interested
(oh no, no way, uh uh)
No I gotta go out and have fun at someone elses expense
(woah yeah, yeah yeah, yeah yeah yeah)
I drive really slow in the ultra fast lane
While people behind me are going insane

Im an asshole (hes an asshole, what an asshole)
Im an asshole (hes an asshole, such an asshole)

I use public toilets and I piss on the seat
I walk around in the summer time saying how about this heat?

Im an asshole (hes an asshole, what an asshole)
Im an asshole (hes the worlds biggest asshole)

Sometimes I park in handicapped spaces
While handicapped people make handicapped faces

Im an asshole (hes an asshole, what an asshole)
Im an asshole (hes a real fucking asshole)

Maybe I shouldnt be singing this song
Ranting and raving and carrying on
Maybe theyre right when they tell me Im wrong
Nah

Im an asshole (hes an asshole, what an asshole)
Im an asshole (hes the worlds biggest asshole)

You know what Im gonna do
Im gonna get myself a 1967 Cadillac Eldorado convertible
Hot pink, with whale skin hubcaps
And all leather cow interior
And make brown baby seal eyes for head lights (yeah)
And Im gonna drive in that baby at 115 miles per hour
Gettin' 1 mile per gallon,
Sucking down Quarter Pounder cheeseburgers from McDonalds
In the old fashioned non-biodegradable styrofoam containers
And when Im done sucking down those greeseball burgers
Im gonna wipe my mouth with the American flag
And then Im gonna toss the styrofoam containers right out the side
And there aint a goddamn thing anybody can do about it
You know why, because weve got the bombs, thats why
2 words, nuclear fucking weapons, OK?
Russia, Germany, Romania, they can have all the democracy they want
They can have a big democracy cakewalk
Right through the middle of Tiananmen Square
and it wont make a lick of difference
Because weve got the bombs, OK?
John Wayne's not dead, hes frozen, and as soon as we find a cure for cancer
Were gonna thaw out the duke and hes gonna be pretty pissed off
You know why,
Have you ever taken a cold shower, well multiply that by 15 million times
Thats how pissed off the dukes gonna be!
I'm gonna get the Duke, and John Cassavetes,
and Lee Marvin, and Sam Peckinpah, and a case of whiskey,
and drive down to Texas and say.....

(Hey! You know, you really are an asshole!)
Why don't you just shut up and sing the song, pal?
Im an asshole (hes an asshole.what an asshole)
Im an asshole (hes the worlds biggest asshole)

A-S-S-H-O-L-E
Everybody
A-S-S-H-O-L-E

Im an asshole and Im proud of it

U2's "In God's country" also does something to me...maybe it's just Bono's whimpsy vocal:

"In God's Country"

Yeah

Desert sky
Dream beneath a desert sky
The rivers run but soon run dry
We need new dreams tonight

Desert rose
Dreamed I saw a desert rose
Dress torn in ribbons and in bows
Like a siren she calls to me

Sleep comes like a drug
In God's Country
Sad eyes, crooked crosses
In God's Country

Set me alight
We'll punch a hole right through the night
Everyday the dreamers die
See what's on the other side

She is liberty
And she comes to rescue me
Hope, faith, her vanity
The greatest gift is gold

Sleep comes like a drug
In God's Country
Sad eyes, crooked crosses
In God's Country

Naked flame
She stands with a naked flame
I stand with the sons of Cain
Burned by the fire of love
Burned by the fire of love

OK, I'll stop with this post...there are so many songs...but check out this Icelandic(!!) song. I don't know, cos' I'm not Icelandic, but there's something moving about this tune. Check it out. The band is called 'Sigur Ros' - means 'Victory Rose' or something like that.

An alright start

Bright Hopes Come True
As We Walk Downtown
Smiling And Laughing Happily
Friendship And Exhaustion Collide
We Celebrate The Day
A Two Year Wait
A Distant Dream Is Born
We Eat And Drink Til We?re Full
And Pay For Ourselves
With Everything We Have For The Day
We Sit Down Excited
Listen To Ourselves Play In Rhythm To The Music
No One Seems To Listen
This Is Completely Different
We Lived In Another World
Where We Were Never Invisible
A Few Days Later
We Speak Again
But The Sound Wasn?t Good
We Were All In Agreement
In Agreement About Most Things
We?ll Do Better Next Time
This Is A Pretty Good Beginning

great thread..there are so many I would list....Black, Pearl Jam is at the top along with He Stopped Loving Her Today, by George Jones...

He said "I'll love you till I die",
she told him "You'll forget in time"
As the years went slowly by,
she still preyed upon his mind

He kept her picture on his wall,
went half-crazy now and then
He still loved her through it all,
hoping she'd come back again

Kept some letters by his bed
dated nineteen sixty-two
He had underlined in red
every single "I love you"

I went to see him just today,
oh but I didn't see no tears
All dressed up to go away, first time
I'd seen him smile in years

He stopped loving her today
They placed a wreath upon his door
And soon they'll carry him away
He stopped loving her today

(Spoken)
You know,
she came to see him one last time.
Aww, 'n' we all wondered if she would.
And it kept runnin' through my mind
"this time he's over her for good."

He stopped loving her today
They placed a wreath upon his door
And soon they'll carry him away
He stopped loving her today

Being Drunks a lot like loving you, Kenny Chesney

I drank till i stumbled
i drank till i fell...
when the drunk part was over
it hurt me like hell
now i know about drinkin
so i know one things true,
being drunks a lot like lovin you...

cause i love till i stumbled
i loved till i fell
when the lovin was over
it hurt me like hell
now i know what a taste
of the wrong love can do
bein drunks a lot like lovin you....

and ive woke up some mornings and sworn off the drink
at that I've done reasonably well I think
but i havnt done well swearin off you and me
at that I fail miserably

i felt the hangover of lovin all night
ive sat at the bar all alone in a fight...
ive bottled up feelings and poured them out too...
being drunks a lot like lovin you...

and ive woken some mornings and sworn off to drink
at that I've done reasonably well I think
but i havnt done well swearin off you and me
at that I fail miserably

i drank till i sumbled, i loved till i fell..
when the drunk part was over love hurt me like hell,
now i know about drinkin so i know one things true..
bein drunks a lot like lovin you
now i know what a taste of the wrong love can do
sometimes i..still get drunk.. lovin you.

"This Could Be Love"

I've got a book of matches
I've got a can of kerosene
I've got some bad ideas involving you and me
I don't blame you for walking away
I touched myself had thoughts of flames
I shat the bed and laid there in it
Thinking of you wide awake for days
Wide awake for days

And I found you tongue-tied in my twisted little brain
You couldn't crack a smile
I didn't catch your name
I don't blame you for walking away
I'd do the same if I saw me
I swear it's not contagious
In four short steps we can erase this

Step one -- slit my throat
Step two -- play in my blood
Step three -- cover me in dirty sheets and run laughing out of the house
Step four -- stop off at Edgebrook Creek and rinse your crimson hands
You took me hostage and made your demands
I couldn't meet them so you cut off my fingers, one by one

I'm like a broken record
I've got a needle scratching me
It injects the poison of alcohol I.V.
I don't blame you for walking away
I'd do the same if I saw me
I swear it's not contagious
I swear to God it's not contagious

Step one -- slit my throat
Step two -- play in my blood
Step three -- cover me in dirty sheets and run laughing out of the house
Step four -- stop at Lake Michigan and rinse your crimson hands
You took me hostage and made your demands
I couldn't meet them so you cut off my fingers, one by one

This could be love - love for fire
This could be love - love for fire
This could be love - love for fire
This could be love for fire forevermore

Step one -- slit my throat
Step two -- play in my blood
Step three -- cover me in dirty sheets and run laughing out of the house
Step four -- stop at Berkeley Marina and rinse your crimson hands
You took me hostage and made your demands
I couldn't meet them so you cut off my fingers, one by one
One by one

Og min Casio time

Og min Casio time
kommer altid i vejen
men det går i sig selv
når jeg slår den ihjel

Green Fields of France by Eric Bogle

Well how do you do, young Willie McBride,
do you mind if I sit here down by your graveside.
And rest for awhile 'neath the warm summer sun.
I've been working all day and I'm nearly done.
I see by your gravestone you were only nineteen
when you joined the dead heroes of nineteen-sixteen.
I hope you died well and I hope you died clean.
Or Willie McBride, was it slow and obscene.

Did they beat the drum slowly, did they play the fife lowly,
Did they sound the dead-march as they lowered you down.
And did the band play the Last Post and chorus.
Did the pipes play the 'Flowers of the Forest'.

And did you leave a wife or a sweetheart behind
In some faithful heart is your memory enshrined
Although you died back in nineteen sixteen
In that faithful heart are you forever nineteen
Or are you a stranger without even a name
Enclosed and forever behind the glass pane
In a old photograph, torn and battered and stained
And faded to yellow in a brown leather frame.

The sun now it shines on these green fields of France
There's a warm summer breeze, it makes the red poppies dance.
And look how the sun shines from under the clouds
There's no gas, no barbed wire, there's no guns firing now
But here in this graveyard it's still no-man's-land.
The countless white crosses stand mute in the sand
To man's blind indifference to his fellow man
To a whole generation that were butchered and damned.

Now young Willie McBride I can't help wonderin' why
Do all those who lie here know why they died
And did they believe when they answered the cause
Did they really believe that this war would end wars?
Well the sorrows, the suffering, the glory, the pain
The killing and dying were all done in vain
For young Willie McBride it's all happened again.
And again, and again, and again, and again.

Life it seems will fade away
Drifting further every day
Getting lost within myself
Nothing matters no one else
I have lost the will to live
Simply nothing more to give
There is nothing more for me
Need the end to set me free

Things not what they used to be
Missing one inside of me
Deathly lost, this can't be real
Cannot stand this hell I feel
Emptiness is filling me
To the point of agony
Growing darkness taking dawn
I was me, but now He's gone

No one but me can save myself, but it's too late
Now I can't think, think why I should even try

Yesterday seems as though it never existed
Death greets me warm, now I will just say good-bye
