how often do you actually visit a .org domain?

i may have come into recent possession of some names but i am just wondering how often do you actually visit a .org domain?

i BARELY ever visit them.

bopha 03-14-2005 11:36 AM

Hardly ever if ever.

pradaboy 03-14-2005 11:38 AM

sometimes, the worth is more into either the traffic that already exists on it or the word being a generic word or in the last case very brandable :2 cents:

candyflip 03-14-2005 11:39 AM

If I do, it's usually because I'm checking out some non-profit.

mortenb 03-14-2005 11:40 AM

Pretty much only through links.. I can't remember the last time I typed in a .org domain.

MetaMan 03-14-2005 11:42 AM

TORTOISE 03-14-2005 11:46 AM

Sedo.com reports some high profile sales frequently. If you want the link to a domainforum where you can sell it or at least get some more into the art of selling domains let me know.

every day

StuartD 03-14-2005 12:40 PM

I never really notice. If I search for something on yahoo or google, I click on the results that look most relevant, I hardly ever notice the domain name, much less the extension.

axelcat 03-14-2005 12:45 PM

Ive must of visited about a couple in about 6 years

JenC 03-14-2005 12:51 PM

Lots of times because I own several of them. But what does it matter if you're getting SE traffic? I mean as long as they click through the link, the domain name might as well be fdsfd6sbfdsiee33h3hfe.org

hydro 03-14-2005 12:52 PM

rarely :batman

boner 2.0 03-14-2005 12:52 PM

well it shouldnt matter, but for branding reasons it does for me.

Can you elaborate on the internal branding debate in which you are engaged?

i cant get into details on mine specifically considering i am still in limbo with the deal but:

if my company name is "skull inc" and the only .com domain avail is "theskull.com" and i could obtain "skull.org" i would rather spend the extra $ for "skull.org".

wes 03-14-2005 01:15 PM

rarely..

arg 03-14-2005 01:16 PM

I visit slashdot.org regularly, and aadl.org (my local library's site) irregularly. Their extension doesn't matter to me. I'm sure I visit quite a few from google links, but I'm not paying enough attention to the domains to remember them. It would be unusual for me to type in a .org I didn't know, unless I was trying to guess the domain of a specific organization...I wouldn't just try a generic .org name. I do have some generic .orgs, the best of which gets a couple dozen uniques per day, but most are quite marginal.

Tough call, either way you'd lose traffic to people thinking it's skull.com. I'd consider buying skull.org, and register both theskull.com and theskull.org, then establish "theskull.org" as the primary site, so people mis-remembering it will be more apt to misremember it as "theskull.com" or "skull.org," which would redirect back to theskull.org.
