Do prepaid visa's work online?

Their giftcards/visa's? I know a friend who is paranoid to use his card online (don't blame him his computer is pretty infected as well), but I am wondering if I can get a relative to send one over to Australia so that he can use it online. It says that are only valid in the US, so I am wondering if some large merchants check based on IP aswell when someone tries to use one online. I could always set him up a US based proxy, but just wondering. Thanks.

Yeah I myself have a St George debit visa. Commonwealth doesn't offer them though. Here's some info about the 'giftcards':

Visa Gift cards displaying the message "Valid only in the United States" can be used anywhere Visa debit cards are accepted within the U.S.
Issuers have set their parameters to decline all authorization requests from non-U.S.-acquired merchants, including mail/telephone orders and Internet transactions.
The way I read that, as long as it is used to purchase from a company inside the US it will probably work if the company ships to Australia.

Ok, that is kinda what I thought on a second reading too. If that is the case it would be good though.

They work great.. They aren't very good for retention rates though... But look on the bright side, no chargebacks :0

why not call a seller of these gift cards and find out directly rather than guessing?

yea they should work fine, i use my virtual paypal card for my mainstream hosting and never had any problems with it. I don't thinka virtual visa card would be that different.

It depends on...
Card emitter - it's the main criterion.
