Have you ever been to Japan?

KRL 03-13-2005 06:41 PM

If you ever do a business deal with Japanese people, be sure to have an American that understands the language with you but don't let them know he speaks the language. They will start talking in Japanese during meetings thinking you don't know what they are saying and you'll be amazed when you get the translations.

I have done a ton of business with the Japanese and their little Japanese sidebars during meetings and conference calls are legendary. Nothing is worse than being on a conference call with them and they start having a rapid conversation with each other that you can't understand but at the same time you know it's related to you.

I did some immersion schooling to learn the language quickly and got to the point where I could understand what they were saying. It was easily one of the best things I have ever done. Bastards.

About $12/hour for very professional translation. I just had a couple of my front end translated and the cost was less than $80 per (lots of stories on every page). For regular paysites, it'd be cheaper.

Icq or email jay at nexpal dot com if interested.

I have lots of respect for an American that can learn any Asian language (reading and writing).

I'm an Asian-American, and have trouble writing Mandarin. Not having phonetics is such a bitch.

I know in 2000 only 3 % of italians had (either internet or computers)
i dont think it went to 50% in the last 4 years, considering Italian phone systems are horrible.

But than again maybe they did, i havent been to Italy in the last 5 years.

I am sure a very small percentage of chinese pople speaks English, but I was under the impression that those who use the inernet can be called "elite" - they are richer and better educated than the general population.

Offcourse there is an elite (more so in Japan then in China). But even within this Elite there is a very small minority that speaks English. For the chinamen you would have to look to the former british colonies to find English speaking people. They surf the internet in their own language with their own lettertypes. In their "elite" english is not a plus. :)

Steen2 03-15-2005 01:19 AM

Comparing it to domain names, I thought DE would be ontop (after English).
