Dersu Uzala was the first Kurosawa movie that I watched, and remains among my favorites.
Practically every top director in America has studied Kurosawa's films. His impact on George Lucas and Quentin Tarentino is particularly noticeable. Kurosawa is probably best known for his samurai epics. Of those movies, Kagemusha ("Shadow Warrior"), remains my favorite. What I respect most about Kurosawa is that he did an amazing job of changing with the times and becoming more of a painter with moving pictures as his life progressed. My favorite Kurosawa movie is "Dreams", which was one of his last films. I think he knew his end was near, and so he wanted to make a statement about the environment, which he masterfully did. "Man is a genius when he is dreaming". -Akira Kurosawa ADG Webmaster |
My best friend is a huge fan of Asian cinema and has been educating me on Kurosawa. When I mentioned this thread to him his answer was 'sanjuro'.
