File Transfers From Old Computer To New... Pain In The Ass...
I go and snag a new Toshiba Qosmio and am trying to transfer files from my old laptop using an ethernet crossover cable.
Sounds simple don't it? Well it sure ain't. Using the transfer wizard from both XP OSs it's more complex than reading a contest thread on GFY. Finally, I had to go to this site to get instructions. http://aumha.org/win5/a/fast.php Didn't know the option existed. No wonder people are screaming for help in file transferring. Used to be you could just connect em', go to the networking wizard and be done. Anybody have luck with this? btw, I got my Qosmio for $800 less than the MRP!!! Pays to go to Cnet and shop! |

Hmmm, I just bought a new laptop and it was real easy to transfer everything over. I keep everything on my computer in two files; "personal" and "work". Then when I buy a new computer I just copy the two folders to a shared directory and grab them from "my network places" from the new computer.

Buy an external Firewire Hard Drive :2 cents:

Install the old HD into the new pc and swap the files.

Don't know what are you talking about, I used to do it with a friend of mine all the time (2 PCs with XP) with no problem whatsoever. Setting the network takes couple of minutes, but that was it. Good luck anyway ;)

just use ftp.... simpler.

Yeh it can be a bitch sometimes, I would have networked the two (got networking working ok) and then just drag across, u could get a wifi setup pretty cheap and u could use it for other stuff. Other option is to use an external drive (usb2) or an external dvd burner.
