BUSINESS THREAD: What is best for a cross sell: a free trial, or $1 trial?

So if you are offering a cross sell on a site, how much should the cross sell be? Free, or $1? And for how many days? 1 day? 3 days? 5 days?

What do you guys think, as far as maximizing your income.

And no, the cross sell is not gonna be $40 after the trial, it will be just $14.95.

adonthenet 03-12-2005 10:11 AM

well then.... do it 1 day for free , trust me!

NastyChannels 03-12-2005 10:16 AM

Good questions...i like threads like this...i think a free trial for 1 day or 3 days is best but Paycom wont approve anymore....the next would be $1 for 3 days....

Interesting, so Paycom will not approve free cross sells anymore? Is that written in stone, or is it on a case by case basis, so if you can prove a good track record with low chargebacks, they may allow it?

So $1 for 3 days, compared to $1 for 1 day or even 2 days, why do you say the 3 days is best? Is that based on your previous experience?

I appreciate your comments Raffi. I like your threads as well, which are mostly business related :)

wow, really? Thats a high priced trial.

Alex 03-12-2005 05:53 PM

$1 for a few days is best because you know that they will pay after the trial

right, but this is a cross sell, m,eaning they are already paying for the first membership, so you know they will pay for more already.

XPays 03-12-2005 08:11 PM

do free and then cancel all the one's who do not login so there is nothing but a refund/void.

make sure you have plenty of other transactions to wash with :thumbsup

Bingo. The most important x-sell peice is cancelling those who do not log in (especially prechecks). However, I'd still recommend paid trials as the transaction is factored into your chargeback ratio; while free are not.

Right but that doesnt mean they will signup up for you.
$1 gives you a surfer who has paid for paysitse at least twice

Adultplayersclub free trials kickass, $1 do ok but free is best if you want the most Crosssells

Wow, that may be the best tip I have gotten on GFY! Thank you Evan!!

Does anyone know what percentage of cross sells members never log in to the members areas?

wow, I didnt know that. So on a free trial is not counted as a tranasction, but if the customer chargesback once the free trial become a full membership, the chargeback counts towards you. Is this right?

AsylumN 03-13-2005 11:33 AM

Bumpo for more informative responses like the last few ones :)

Basically, you need to sell something to have a transaction count in the banks eyes. A buck, three bucks, whatever....but a free trial is essentially *air*. Most will send an auth on a free trial but an auth does not count towards cb ratios; only settles do.

So if you have a surfer who signs up for a free trial, then converts, you have one sale and if he charges back you have a 100% cb ratio on him.

Another benefit to low cost trials is that many banks will not charge back a low dollar sale as it isn't worth their time. So if the above example was a one dollar trial you would likely have a 50% cb ratio...big difference.

That just reminded me....my earlier comments are purely Credit Card related. Free trials are a whole nother' animal on checks.

JMScore, your info is sooooo appreciated!! It's really helping me out, and others as well I am sure.

Would you be able to elaborate more on free trials on checks?

AsylumN 03-13-2005 03:33 PM

:1orglaugh

Not True!!!! We see $2.95 chargebacks on one-off's and we also see people cb the initial 2.95 and the renewal after the trial which is equals 2 cb's.

Are you new there? Jettis knows their shit inside and out from my experience :thumbsup

$1 trials seem to convert better

BradShaw 03-14-2005 05:06 PM

Free's will make you a lot more, but good luck getting them approved by EPOCH.

chri$tian 03-14-2005 05:14 PM
