How many hosting company can past an audit if one was done?

just to clarify for those who dont understand.

Companies can get audited by software manufacturer and they have to show the amount of license they have and that they are using.

since many use linux and freebsd and thus being open source, they can have unlimited amount of copies.

but OS like Windows server, Windows Nt.. etc etc. need licenses to have/operate them.

So any hosting willing to stake their reputation by claiming they own all legit copies of server software?

We don't admin a single windows box. All our dedicated and virtual servers run linux. We do have 2 colocated servers running windows. But we didn't build the machines and I honestly have no idea if the windows software is fully licensed or not. They were both shipped to us fully installed and just needed to be racked and plugged in. I suspect many other hosting companies would say the same thing...

im not gonna debate colocation. All im simply asking is that many hosting providers have Windows Os for their servers, im just wondering how many of them have legit copies.

Rorschach 03-09-2005 11:42 PM

why would you even want a windows server?

Herb Kornfield 03-09-2005 11:50 PM

I would see more the customer of the hosting company having pirated ware on a box than the host themselves.

Most hosts are UNIX houses anyways. Win severs seem to be more of an afterthought execpt for 1 host I know that uses win almost exclusively and wont touch adult customers.........

i know of one that did and past :)

Duke :)

i should just claim i need hosting to get more responses :)

Server edition would be a lot harder to steal than your standard "fill all the employee's computers with the same Windows" scandal that you see in LOTS of businesses, right?

SplitInfinity 03-10-2005 01:14 AM

SplitInfinity can proudly state that all the windows we install are licensed and reported monthly direct to M$. Since we are a Microsoft SPLA provider we have
responsibilities on a monthly basis to report.. :-)

I know of alot's of "hosting companys" that would get lots of fines if a software audit was made..........................

flashfire 03-10-2005 03:32 AM

audits scare me

teksonline 03-10-2005 05:47 AM

are you saying the hosting company is claiming they paid for licenses on their taxes and didnt actually pay? Otherwise why is an auditor achecking for licneses? Are they involved with the SPA? heheh

evildick 03-10-2005 06:44 AM

Hell, my hosting company doesn't even charge me GST, even though we are both located in Canada. I don't imagine they would want to fork out that extra 7% if they were audited. Unless they already have that built into the price and aren't telling me. In which case I am getting screwed.

He's talking a software audit. Never heard of one?

I know a few that can pass the audit and keep in mind I worked for some. But mainly hosts use either FreeBSD or linux so most will pass that Audit hands down.

:thumbsup

JUSTB 03-10-2005 07:21 AM

We absolutely, positively could!

nastysam 03-10-2005 07:25 AM

That is something to consider, good call for companies that do not have the things in rule. HAve to get it straith

xclusive 03-10-2005 07:30 AM

There are so many companies i'm thinking a lot would fail.

Jakke PNG 03-10-2005 07:38 AM

I think 95% of designers would vanish if any authorities asked for their photoshop license. lol :)
No idea about hosting stuff. :)

tranza 03-10-2005 07:38 AM

Here in Brazil I know for a fact 90% of the hosting companies couldn't pass such audit...
