What's your opinion on common colds and going to the Doctor for antibiotics?

I'm a pussy when it comes to being sick and get very cranky, but I think I'm gonna ride this out and let my immune system do what it's suposed to.

I was reading that antibiotics are the most abused drugs in the world.

Besides, it's so fucking hard to get a dr. apointment when you need one the same day or maybe the next day. Not 2 months from now.

I had a fever all night & sweated my ass off. (probably a few pounds)
Sore throat, cough, headache, body aches, even a little nasal congestion, you know the usual cold symtoms.

NinjaSteve 03-08-2005 12:36 PM

I say go get yourself checked out if that's what you want to do. Maybe it's more than a cold, but usually they don't give antibiotics for a cold or flu because it's viral so antibiotics won't help.

TheLegacy 03-08-2005 12:37 PM

sorry to hear that - in canada I could be at the doctors within minutes.. maybe have to wait 1/2 hour and its paid for... sometimes he gives me free samples instead of having to buy drugs.

but if you can get some stuff at the drug store, ask the pharmacist and see what they prescribe

Sly 03-08-2005 12:39 PM

I do whatever I can to stay away from antibiotics. I'm already immune to some from when I was younger. I figure, if I'm ever REALLY sick and REALLY need medicine, I don't want to be immune to everything that would typically cure me.

The body is pretty strong. Get some sleep, drink plenty of water, eat good healthy food... your body will heal itself.

dready 03-08-2005 12:42 PM

You only want to take antibiotics if you have a really serious bacterial infection. Common cold, though you may feel like shit, doesn't even apply.

Rosie 03-08-2005 12:43 PM

Yep common colds are viruses (virii?) rather than bacterial infections and so antibiotics would be pointless.

Heat some malt whiskey and put some honey in it - always works for me :)

bodegabay 03-08-2005 12:45 PM

I get my antibiotics from mexico and stock-pile them until they expire...

I too am a huge wuss when it comes to getting sick

MetaMan 03-08-2005 12:45 PM

why the hell would you go to the doctor for a cold!?!?!

i havent been to the doctors since i was in grade 1, and i am NEVER sick. when you let your immune system do its job it makes you less susceptible.

broke 03-08-2005 12:48 PM

Only time I've been to a doctors office in the last 12 years was to get a benign cyst removed.

Suck it up... you're body will thank you for years to come..

I agree with you.

But my regular family doctor of 20+ years would give me a shot of cortizone, some amoxil, and either some vicodin or prometh vc cough syrup.

It was really great, the cortizone shot would give you a hell of a boost. and the amoxil would kill the infection and the Vicodin would kill the cough and pains.

Too bad he's too far away to be convenient since I moved.

Wilbo 03-08-2005 12:50 PM

Get yourself something like Tylenol Cold medicine at the drug store, it'll make you feel a lot better a lot faster than antibiotics will.

Rosie 03-08-2005 12:51 PM

Your old Doc gave you a shot of steroid and antibiotics for a cold???? Can I suggest you go see your local vet, you'd get a far more medically valid treatment from him I suspect!

I agree. I very rarely get sick. Runny and stuffy nose, sure, but I don't consider that "sick" plus I usually attribute those to my sinuses acting up. What's funny is my old roommate was ALWAYS sick, it was always something new. Of course, she took 4-5 daily pills as is.

Barefootsies 03-08-2005 12:53 PM

Don't take antibiotics unless you really need them.

You do not need them for the flu, or colds. All you do is build up your immune system and they may not work as well over time.

Drink lots of water, get lots of sleep, take something the pharmacist recommends, and in a few days you are all better.

If you actually have influenza, you will need and seek medical care.

I firmly agree on colds and illnesses with "flu-like" symptoms.

BV 03-08-2005 01:13 PM

My neihbor who is a Doctor (Podiatrist) just made a call to his family doctor for me and I got an apointment in an hour.

I'll print this thread out and let him read it. lol

I'm curious to see what this new doctor says compared to my old doctor's treatments.

dirtydesignz 03-08-2005 01:20 PM

Fresh garlic ( I know it smells) is a natural antibiotic of sorts. When you crush it or mince it finely, it releases allicin. Google 'garlic' and you'll see what I mean...it is a daily food at our house :)

Pornwolf 03-08-2005 01:49 PM

You are never immune to antibiotics. The particular bacteria that's eating away at your ass may develop an immunity to it if you take some and stop before the bacteria is completely dead. If that happens you might as well be taking Pez instead of Amoxycillin.

mistress69 03-08-2005 01:50 PM

just tough it out

After Shock Media 03-08-2005 01:50 PM

People are way overusing antibiotics and not just via medicine either. Seems everyone is rushing off to get some whenever they get a sniffle, and to many doctors are handing them out like candy.
On top of that we are getting some in many of the foods we eat, and then idiots are also using various household sprays and quick handwashes/wipes that are anti-bacterial. Which by the way does very fucking little to the damn bacteria since they are not exposed long enough.
What we are really doing is breeding super viri that are immune to near all anti-biotics aside from a select few super anti-biotics. Does it stop there though, of course not. More idiot doctors are handing out the super anti-biotics instead of the regulars. Often something as simple as penicillen would do the job but you get prescribed Cipro.
Doing all this we are really asking for a virus to come along and really kick our asses killing hundred of thousands of people.

Dina_C9 03-08-2005 01:54 PM

if you have fever that persists for more than 72 hours you need antibiotics

CE_BigB 03-08-2005 01:59 PM

Meds are far overused here in America

Homeopathics is the only way..
Treat the illness.. not the symptom

You need to use Big B's Tradeshow Kit
including

Echinacea
Golden Seal Root
Vitamin C
Zinc
Garlique tablets

If you have congestion in the chest... Whole Dried Oregano made into a tea, sweeten with honey and drink as warm as possible. This is a natural expectorant and you can tell its medicine.. cause it tastes nasty!!! :upsidedow

BIG B

I am just getting over a cold. I have Zicam nasal spray, Robitussin, advil multi symptom Cold pills and Airborne and my cold that started on Saturday is almost gone now.

My doc always tells me to use Robitussin, and I know that the zinc in zicam shortens the cold.

Antibiotics can be bad for you.

Interesting thread... and one that recently coincides with me. I'll explain...

About 3 weeks ago, I thought I got the flu. I was feeling a little run down, had flu like symptons (achy muscles, sweating then cold, nauseous, etc...) So, I take some Nyquil and let it ride. The next day I'm feeling better.

Two days go by and all of a sudden, I went from zero to sick. Again, same symptoms as before. I thought I relapsed and this time I did the same thing but rested a bit longer. I then felt better in a couple days and went on with my life.

Then, one night I found myself slowly having trouble breathing. At first it was just some tightness in the chest (started around 8pm on Monday night). I couldn't sleep and I noticed that as the hours went on, I had a more difficult time breathing. I tried taking some hot showers to open myself up, but I noticed that it was working... and now I was getting tunnel vision. By 6am Tuesday, I seriously thought I was going to die. I could barely breath (only quick short breaths). So, I called 911. It turns out I had Pneumonia, and pretty bad. What I thought was the flu was walking pneumonia and it just progressed into full blown pneumonia.

This is something that I would not wish on my worse enemy. For 2 solid weeks, it felt like everytime I took a breath someone was stabbing me in the lungs... seriously. I could only sleep about 1 hour a night and was basically confimed to sitting up 24 hour a day. There was absolutely no way I could lay down... no way.

It was a horrible... horrible experience. And, just like you... I rarely get sick so when the early symptons started, I just thought it was something I could kick in a day or two. So... long story short, if you're under the weather for longer than 3 days, get your butt to the doctor. If I had done that, I would have bypassed two full weeks of extreme pain.

If you're having trouble breathing and your chest is congested, a hot shower is one of the worst things you can do. The heat EXPANDS the mucus in your lungs, making it both harder to breathe and harder to cough up the mucus. If anything, you should have taken a cool shower or inhaled a cool mist. The coolness will contract the mucus, making it easier to cough up.

Pneumonia is my worst enemy. Its part of the reason I moved to San Diego right after high school. It was damn close to taking my life on 3 different occasions, all before I turned 16.

i dont believe in common colds.

i firmly believe more than 75% of human illness, especially common colds are in fact PSYCHOSOMATIC.

i dont believe therefore I do not get colds.

i have not been sick in a very, very long time.

True. If you are sick for more than 24-48 hours, best go see the Dr.

Actually I got the sickest I've ever been in my life last year because I tried to tough it out without using antibiotics.

My glands swelled up to the point where they were constantly aching and looked like they were ready to burst. Swelling didn't totally clear up until 6 months later. Ear nose and throat doctor wanted to take a biopsy.

Don't listen to the hippie bullshit, if you don't start getting better within a week get some antibiotics.

If symptoms last more than a few days sure go see a doctor. Just do not take anti-biotics unless you really have to. More and more people are becoming immune to them and so are the damn bugs, so try to take it a little easy on them.

I use ascorbic acid powder(vit.C) with some orange juice and garlic capsules, they get rid of most coughs and colds I get these days. Amazing what natural healing properties garlic has :thumbsup

stay away from antibiotics unless YOU really have to. or else you gonna fuck your immune system.

chodadog 03-08-2005 05:31 PM

People use medication and pain relief way too frequently these days. The diseases and viruses are becoming more immuned to antibiotics because people are abusing them. There are actually people who will take antibiotics when they have a common cold. It's ridiculous. Personally, i try and avoid medication until it's absolutely essential. If i get a headache or a cold, you just ride it out. It's really not so bad. I'd rather have my immune system developed and ready for when i really need it.

Antibiotics do nothing for colds. Antibiotics are for bacterial infections, a cold is a virus. All you do when you needlessly take antibiotics is to strengthen the resistance of other bacteria to them. The best thing to do for a cold is take some echinacea, some vitamin c, get lots of fluids and rest. If you do that, it should be gone in a day or two. That's the way it generally happens in my house, and with several school-age children, I'm sure you know what a sickness factory schoolkids can be :)
