Whats the most amount of $ you have given a bum?
The other day i gave a bump $10 cash and next thing i see while driving away, 2 other bums come up to him and jump him with an umbrella...wtf...maybe he owed them $ for crack? Pretty sad...
I think i'll stick to quaters .... lol |
I hate it when bums jump me with umbrellas.

5 dollars. I asked him if he was gonna put it towards drugs, beer or hookers. He said hookers, so I gave it to him :thumbsup
|

10 Bucks just 2 days ago, but this Bum I known for a while. He always plays a flute in the woodland Hills Center in the parking lot.
Kool dude and he aint a faker. I respect em for his dedication to always playing music when I go grocerie shopping. |
Well, although I don't call them "bums", I have occasionally given people $5 or $10 when I could afford it. I certainly know how it is to be in need and I wouldn't wish that on anyone, whether they got themselves into that situation or whether it was through something more temporary like being laid off of work, I still feel they deserve to be cared for as human beings. :)
Once there was a guy who washed my windshield at a stoplight in midtown Atlanta and the guy I was dating didn't want me to give him any money. When we drove off I told him how I felt sorry for the guy and I wanted to do something for him, but my boyfriend said he was afraid the guy would buy alcohol with it. (Well, personally I didn't care too much what he bought with it. If he bought a pint of whiskey and then went hungry it would be his own responsibility.) But anyway, I finally talked him into doing something nice for the guy. We went to Subway and bought him a foot long sub, a pack of chips, a cookie and a drink and took it back to him. The poor guy was so happy he actually cried. That was more thanks than I ever could have hoped for. Just seeing the look in his eyes as he opened the bag and breathed heavily, smelling the fresh food... that was amazing. I wish I could have done more for him. Given him a hotel room for the night or something. :( |
I gave up giving to bums and the homeless off the street!
I was doing cold calls about 20 years ago and this homeless dude asked for a few bucks so he could get a bite to eat, having a few sales under my belt that day, I thought what is $10 compared to what this guy goes through daily. Little did I know this dude was scamming right and left, a few days later as I was taking the Metra train north, I could see the very same guy getting into a late model Caddy. Nowadays if I am approached by some homeless person wanting a few bucks to get something to eat, I tell them we'll get something together right now, then they don't want to eat. Downtown Chicago with a resturant in every direction within a block of wherever you stand and 9 out of 10 times they don't want to eat. What really breaks my heart is when you get mothers with their kids as part of the scam... "Mister, I missed the last train to Aurora, can you spare a few bucks so me and my 2 year old son can take a cab?" I always offer to call Amm's Limousine and prepay the ride out to Aurora, no one has ever taken me up on that ride. :( I'm more than happy to help them, Chicago has excellent social services and private groups, the homeless and the bums here are just too interested in the drugs not to get any help, and find the out-of-towners easy marks for continuing their lifestyle. :( |
this one bum asked me for some change, i proceeded to get it from my pocket, drop the change in my hot coffee and threw it in his face. :1orglaugh
|
35 cents and not a penny more
|
i bought him a big mac and a hooker :pimp

I offered a bum $100 to NOT tell me his big long story about why he needs money to get a bus ticket to detroit...
stupid guy couldn't shut up and take it... insisted on trying to tell me his story so he got nothing. |
i never give them any $. what i usually do to save myself hearing them tell me a story is tell them a story first. like i'll run up to them and be like "hey my car just broke down and i need $10 to get it towed, can you spare any $". then you catch them offguard and they usually dont say anything.
one time i was eating downtown detroit at a pizza place outside and a bum walked by and wanted $ to buy food. so i offered him a free slice of pizza and he didnt take it. |

Yeh, lots of scammers in NY too :(
Some do it for a living PLUS they collect bottles! Not sure what to think of these guys. |
We all pay top dollar for ass. Oops, you mean that kind of bum. Sorry.
|
3 bucks - And I noticed the guy only had 1 shoe on so I said "Hey buddy, it looks like you lost a shoe there" and he said "Nah man, I found one" :1orglaugh

I usually give a few bucks...what they do with it is on them, at least my conscience is clear...and my good deed for the day is done :)
|
I was in a shitty neighborhood in Baltimore looking at properties. A guy with no legs in a wheelchair rolls up next to my Jeep and I give him $10. His sign said he lost his legs in Iraq. I went around the block a few times trying to locate a house and I saw the guy give the $10 to the corner dealer. I thought, how fucked up would it be to have a dope habit, no legs and live in that neighborhood.

Various times over the years I have hooked up the homeless and disinfranchised with food, money, whatever. Just depends on mood, what I am doing and alike.
I hoenstly do not put much thought into the bum and 'are they legit' bullshit. If I give them some money, and I am back to my normal happy go lucky life, I figure I did my good dead for the day and I'm done with it, and do not give it a second thought. If they need drugs, booze, hoes to help them get through the day, so be it. I know whatever life they lead and the nerve, or lack of choice to stand on a corner with a sign, or by the off ramp, whatever. I think it is the 'apathy' that is truely sickening. If I give you cash, will you spend it one something worthy, or are you going to hop in the caddy around the corner. But normally those I've given cash to I've seen over and over again in the downtown area, or same corners. But I just hit em up and forget about it. Good deed done, and enjoy. :pimp |
2 bucks...I feel guilty doing it because your probably supporting their habits
|
I generally always give a couple bucks...I could really give a shit if they drive a caddy, live in a penthouse, will spend it on crack, booze, porn, whatever...I figure begging is almost a full time job, so I'll pay him to do his job...it's not like I'm going to lose sleep over whether the homeless man spent the $2 I gave him on some homeless woman ass or not...

5 dolla, make u halla

I give my wife money everyday it seems.

We don't generally give money. We buy them food or offer to give them food and they usually say no. There are so many scammers in our area, it's crazy.
We were driving down the highway and saw a young mom and 4 little kids sitting on the side of the road. We circled back around and stopped. Turns out the woman's husband left her and the kids on the side of the road with nothing. We packed them in the van and drove them to a relatives 20 miles away. The mom was crying and saying to her kids, "never take rides from strangers". It was heart wrenching. She was telling us all the way how good her kids were and how they always help her. She was mortified and humilated. We dropped them off and gave them a couple hundred dollars. If we had more with us we would have given them more. I have no idea if she went back to her Loser husband but it made me consider how great my life is and the money I piss away on Thai food or concert tickets means so little to me but could be important to someone who was truly needy. |

I've given random bums joints of primo weed back in the day, I've handed out old blankets and jackets, and bought beer or other alcohol for them. I've bought lunches for homeless people, mcd's, or just a sandwhich from a deli.
I've also given bums $20 bills if they had a good line about helping themselves and other homeless people. I've also given bums $20 bills that were straight up and said what they wanted the money for, ie drugs or alcohol. Duke wound up giving some cool rapping bum a few dollars the other night. |
there are no bums where i live, so 0
|
I used to walk from my office at Bryant Park in NYC to the Port Authority. Everyday there was a guy dressed as Jimi Hendrix playing his old tunes.
When I finally left that job and moved to Florida, I dropped a $100 bill in his guitar case. He made me smile on more than one occasion. |
$20 is the most. I find it best to call them on whatever it is they're asking for. They say they need food.. .offer food... 75% of them will turn you down. The other 25%, you are actually helping.
|
I always give em dollar or two or sometimes $5 or $10. But I always wish I could help more.
|
The best one is when Spannow gave this guy money (we won't mention how much, but it was very very generous) on 3rd Street Prominade in Santa Monica for the Webmasters last year.... he (the "bum") was sitting at the table next to us.
The "bum" thanked him/us and then pulled out his wallet which included three credit cards. Mind you, the guy didn't want the money, he was just enjoying his slice of pizza, alone. We took over his table and made a new friend. I'm sure he made good use of it and Spannow had a good feeling the rest of the night =) |
