A Calorie and a calorie are different. A Calorie is whats in food, a calorie is a way to measure heat flow.

Yeah, I am bored and know a lot of useless information.

The unit of heat equal to the amount of heat required to raise the temperature of 1 kilogram of water by 1°C at 1 atmosphere pressure

2HousePlague 03-06-2005 11:17 PM

The calorie is a unit of energy, defined as follows: the amount of energy needed to raise 1 cl (1 gr.) of water 1 degree Celsius.

Unfortunately, the popular use of the unit "calorie" in the dietary/nutritional context is actually based on the KiloCalorie (1,000 calories) -- since our meal intake and our burn-capacity is on the order of millions of "calories" per day.

Accordingly, One Calorie on a Twinkie wrapper is 1,000 calories in the lab.

Yes, thats how they figure out how many Calories are in food. They dry the food then burn it and see how much energy is need to raise the temperature of water.

The only problem with that first part is that "calorie" and "Calorie" are different, "Calorie," with a capital "C" is a nutritional measurement while a "calorie" with a lowercase "c" is a thermochemical measurement. :2 cents:

I am shocked that this thread has replies and a discussion happening in it.

Right you are -- mind your c's and C's.
