Graphic Designers - small job, big oppritunity....
 

I'm the asst. program director and co-host for a radio show here in the SF Bay Area.

This show is on the #1 FM radio station in all of Northern California, owned by ClearChannel. This is also the top radio show in its timeslot.

We are looking for a new logo for this specific show. This is a late-night weekend mixshow targeted towards clubbers, ravers, etc mainly featuring Trance and House music.

Past guests include Paul Oakenfold, Paul Van Dyke, DJ Dan, Donald Glaude, Richard HumptyVission and more (for those familiar with the music).

Anyways, last time I did a design contest here I was very happy with the results.

We will pay $75 for the logo we choose. We will need the origional to be a large file in 300DPI so we can use it for printing also.

As you can see, its very old and needs a facelift or a completely new design.

The winner will also recieve credit by and a link on our website, which will be HIGHLY PROMOTED on-air!

$75/hour payment isnt "lunch" , maybe you just need more jobs to fill your day.

I did a contest last week for a 468x60 ANIMATED gif banner and got 12 different design entries... the prize was $50 and the designs were good.

This is more money, and not animated, $75 is fair.

If it takes you more than an hour of pure work to make 1 logo (no icq, no gfy, no irc, like a real job) then you probably shouldnt be a designer.

$75 is bullshit. Hell, decent logo guys can charge upwards of $250 for a logo and that is guaranteed. $75 and only a chance of getting paid? Fuck that. And how is this a big oppurtunity? Is the logo going to be accompanied by "designed by *****" text everywhere it goes? Are you going to make an announcement on your show to a bunch of raver kids about who designed the logo? Whoop-dee-do.

go to ANY real design firm and mention $75 bucks for a logo and you'll be laughed out the fuckin door.

Yup, first thing that crossed my mind as well. Less than half what I charge for one.

Ok, I know this is normal GFY bullshit to try to disagree with every post you possibly can. But hey, for the fuck of it...

1) I AM BASING THE $75 ON THE ESTIMATED TIME YOU'D SPEND WORKING ON IT. I'm figuring a good designer can have a nice one done in 30 minutes, and the amateur designer maybe 1 hour. No fucking graphic design firm pays employees $75 an hour unless you're asking for 3d rendering or animation - WHICH I AM NOT - so theres absolutely no justification for me to pay more.

2) If your going to make a logo so fancy it'll take more than an hour, DON'T BOTHER, we don't need something amazing and 3d rendered, just something basic and clean with a professional touch.

Like I said, if it would take you more than one hour to make a basic logo - you're an amateur. Otherwise, im paying $75/hour, and im not asking for more than $75 worth of effort.

Designers are not paid for time, they are paid for brilliance.

Creating shit is not a simple mundane mechanical rinse cycle as business types often fail to realise all to often. Ya want good design? Find a good designer and pay them for being creative not for being a 15 minute whore.

A logo is more than just the 20 or 30 minutes it might take to knock it up in photoshop. It's coming up with various concepts and seeing which work best. It's the creativion of those ideas you're paying for. Not the tedious photoshop work. And even so, this is supposed to be a contest. In a contest, you win a prize. This prize is pitiful. It's like hiring a bunch of labourers and telling them that the one that gives you the best work after 5 days gets a week's worth of wages. Where's the incentive to put in effort for a job you might not get paid for? The whole point of a contest is that the risk is worthwhile. Time and effort for a chance at $75? I think not.

I agree the prize is a little bit low. Too low, for sure.

My fees for instance start at $149 and run up to $350.

But if you don't wanna join, don't. I joined this contest so that if I win he can donate it to the victims in Asia (tsunami) or some other charity. Already did this when I became runner up in one of Deadfidel's threads, I donated the cash to charity.

The idea came instantly...so why not join for a good cause?

I don't know what all the hostility is about guys. I've gotten more jobs from entering logo contests I didn't win than spending $100 on a Google Adwords campaign.

So if you don't need something nice, why did you come in here at all? And by the way, VERY few contest announcements in here receive flak. It's usually politics, opinions about women &c. that get contentious. So this thread isn't "the usual GFY bullshit".

most logo contests here in the last few years range from $150 - $400
More around the $150.00 mark.

I think a lot of you guys are forgetting that you get a good ads spot:

Now I agree $75 would not be enough. But if it can get you more work in mainstream. Then I would do it. Shit I lose more time/money talking with dumbass webmasters on ICQ.

If you could design something in less than an hour I would do it. I am not a graphics designer though. If you don't think its enough, then just dont participate.
