clickhappy: BUILD YOUR UGLY SITE!
Quote:
For clarity, I'm talking about JUST pay-sites, here. And by "amateur" I simply mean NOT professional. I don't mean "amateur content", though there is a connection -- I'll talk about that later. In the beginning, it was all "amateur", of course, and very few sites were equipped for payments at all, much less hoped to get any orders. Then the 3rd party processors brought billions to the industry, and a "look of legitimacy" (glitzy design, etc) became the standard. It used to be that if a site didn't drip design dollars, it meant they weren't making any money, and so how could they be legit -- or so thought the consumers. For a few years, if you had "the look" you had it made. This was when consumers were just wary of having their credit numbers stolen -- that was the big fear. That somebody would "hack" your CC number and buy shit. Remember? So, by implication, the merchant was trustworthy, because he was the guy you INTENDED to give your CC number to. So, insofar as sites with an amateur look to them conveyed a threadbare budget, not having their "act together", etc., they looked UNSAFE to consumers. Now, let's fast forward to the present, having lived through the eventual design homogenization of all pay sites and the advent (then explosive ubiquity) of the pop-up ad. Today, pay sites are like porn stars -- they all have fake tits and seem more artificial than ever in porn history. Maybe it's just me. But everynow and then, you can catch an exceptional performance from an as-yet-unspoiled talent. Our eyes (well, MY eyes, anyway) have acquired an unexpected sensitivity to Genuine Sex, for there being so little of it around. The point I'm making is... PLEASE DESIGN THE SITE YOURSELF. You are obviously an intelligent individual with enough passion for his project to seek advice from this community. I have no doubt whatsoever that you will produce what the online porn landscape needs most, A PLACE WHERE A VIEWPOINT IS EXPRESSED. At this stage, consumers know that the real danger is getting cranked on rebills from the merchant they trusted (who hid namelessly, facelessly behind all that fancy design). In your case, they will tell at a glance they are visiting a site somebody cares about, somebody watches over -- a site they can trust. BUILD YOUR SITE. THEY WILL NOTICE IT BECAUSE IT IS PERSONAL. THEY WILL BUY BECAUSE PEOPLE WHO STAND PUBLICLY BY THEIR SITES DON'T STEAL FROM THEIR CUSTOMERS. Best of Luck! j- |
