i did something similar, i worked for various Clecs, doing everything from tip and ring to testing and porting T-1s, but my bread and butter came from premise fiber optics along with installing small time hardware from wireless to basic phone systems. unfortunately, the big money comes from holding big accounts, and those are the accounts i am aiming at now :)
