Recycling is not always the environmentally correct choice. Many items we recycle come from abundant raw materials and are inert and harmless when dumped. It costs more to recycle these than to bury the used and manufacture the new from scratch. Glass is a perfect example; plastic runs a close second. If throwing away glass and plastic causes us to ever run out of sand and oil byproducts we can mine the landfills and recycle them all at once - it would be cheaper and easier than perpetual recycling. There's plenty of land for landfills, there's very little hazard remaining in modern landfills, and the economics and the environment often favor using them. Trillions are squandered on needless recycling. So what myths prevent change?
recycling will actually hurt us in the long run

do your research people!

Jace 03-05-2005 02:29 AM

here is some more info

Quote:

Recycling is a manufacturing process with environmental impacts. Viewed across a wide spectrum of goods, recycling sometimes cuts pollution, but not always. The EPA has examined both virgin paper processing and recycled paper processing for toxic substances and found that toxins often are more prevalent in the recycling process.

Often the pollution associated with recycling shows up in unexpected ways. Curbside recycling, for example, requires that more trucks be used to collect the same amount of waste materials. Thus, Los Angeles has 800 rubbish trucks rather than 400, because of its curb-side recycling. This means more iron ore and coal mining, steel and rubber manufacturing, petroleum extraction and refining - and of course extra air pollution in the Los Angeles basin.
i am a HUGE anti-recycling advocate

iwantchixx 03-05-2005 03:02 AM

We'd all be fine if it weren't for plastic. However, like someone said, it can be mined again if we run out but the extraction process of removing the plastic from everything mined up from the dumps would probably cost a lot in the long run and cause tons of polution in the long run as well. Either way, were fucked.

Plastic has only been around for about 100 years now and we don't really know the long term effects of exposure to it either. It is afterall petroleum. Whos to say that it won;t destroy the soil 100 years from now when it starts to break down?

A lot of people here watched that episode of Penn and Teller and think they are brain surgeons now :D

Don't believe everything in the media, but I am for recycling of aluminium and against plastic.

No, that recycling is bullshit, you cause more pollution recycling, than not. It's a big myth that it actually helps. It only helps the companies pockets who are doing it. it is not necessary at all, there is alot of room for landfills and it doesn't cause as much pollution that is said.

Scott McD 03-05-2005 06:20 AM

Hmmm, interesting...

jimmyf 03-05-2005 08:22 AM

well I can tell you one thing, recycling in California is a mess and it's because of the recycling board ( STATE ) fucked it up.

You should see the paper work the companies do, a total mess.

I know this because I put some software in for some big recycler's.

You had a lot of state's, when they were starting there programs they came 2 CA. checked out the program here.. Got a lession in how ** NOT ** 2 do it. :1orglaugh

Oh by the way I love Glass Recycler's bought a lot of my software. :thumbsup

PurrrsianPussyKat 03-05-2005 09:11 AM

I am a recycle fiend and I have been since I moved out of my parents 16 yrs ago.

I have litterally recycled more material than you could fill a football stadium with by now.

I remember working part time in a small store when I was about 18. They used to get a truck load of groceries every week and they would flatten and throw away a dumpster worth of cardboard every week. I convinced them to recycle it when the town implemented a recycling program.

In the town we live in now, it sucks because we have to truck it to a bunch of bins, and then you have to put it all in these tiny holes. It's such a pita, but I hope I'm saving my childrens children from having to live near something like the Fresh Kills Landfill in Staten Island. (I lived on SI for about 2 yrs. Scary to drive by and see all that trash)

JFK 03-05-2005 10:20 AM

We recycle as well..........I have heard both sides of the argument, but there is not that much land available for dumps. No one wants a dump in their neighborhood. In Ontario, Can. where I live , they truck the garbage to a Michigan landfill site, which creates a big controversy in it self. I figure the less junk ending up buried in the earth the better :2 cents:

Spunky 03-05-2005 11:28 AM

I'm all for it and do it..every little bit helps and keeps it out of the landfill :thumbsup

MichaelP 03-05-2005 11:36 AM

I'd be for it, but I heard that even if you are recycling and using your recycle bin, in some places, the content goes either to landfill or to incinerator anyweay... :(

sickkittens 03-05-2005 11:37 AM

I try to recycle everything.
