Why do affiliates remove the watermark from sponsors contents?

I'm seeing alot of sponsors content that with no watermark on them, and it's obvious the watermark has been removed. I wonder why!

Fletch XXX 03-04-2005 05:34 PM

"if CJ does it, i can too!"

After Shock Media 03-04-2005 05:35 PM

They claim its for clarity and so it looks better. Though I really think they are being super spoiled, ungratefull and greedy, many thinking they will loose so much valuable traffic to the surfers who will type in the url instead of just clicking a link.

Lycanthrope 03-04-2005 05:35 PM

A) A particular TGP / Linklist doesn't accept watermarked pics.
B) They are using content to promote a non related sponsor altogether.
C) They are stupid.
D) All of the above.

polish_aristocrat 03-04-2005 05:36 PM

I can see 3 reasons :

- either to steal the content and promote another sponsor with it
- because they feel the images look better without the watermarks
- because affiliates want to avoid the situation when the surfers sees the watermark and types in the url by themselves instead of using the affiliate link

It's so a surfer can't see the url and do a direct type in bypassing the webmastes affiliate code ...

el_greco 03-04-2005 05:39 PM

Maybe you want the surfer to think that your gallery is the only way to get to this paysite...

SykkBoy 03-04-2005 06:53 PM

so they can get terminated without pay from the program?

If I find em, they could lose more than a surfer or two.. they could lose their account :(

So dont do that. :)

WarChild 03-04-2005 08:20 PM

I cut the water mark out of the thumbnails for TGPs, but not out of the gallery its self. I doubt anyone would term me for it.

Get rid of the watermarked bit with the url maybe, but replace copyright etc.

Really. All you need to do is visit a few TGP sites and click on the thumbs of your content. I'm sure you'll find more than a few that have crop the watermark out of the big pictures.

sweetcuties 03-05-2005 01:26 PM

I don't remove mine

Serious-Partner 03-05-2005 03:24 PM

Yup

We meet the webmaster 1/2 way and only brand our Exclusive Content.

With the site name, not the .com.

Example, click an image:
http://www.pimpfreepics.com/pt/33/in...ml?ft=pimp3954

Cost of production is *VERY* high and the branding is in place to protect it.

Why do people copyright things or get trademarks?

We do offer gigs and gigs of unbranded photo and video content for our non-exclusive sites.

Alex 03-05-2005 04:00 PM

Usually when i crop thumbs i dont leave the bottom right because there is no point.
Its not intentional but it happends

Wiggles 03-05-2005 04:23 PM

watermarks look horrible when getting galleries and freesites accepted, 99% get denied, make more money not having watermark. or a very small one only.

That is very respectable, if I was a gallery builder and wasn't signed up with you, I would do it now. Keep it up :D
