What is a good ping time for a good hosting company?
If you ping sites at a decent hosting company, what should a good average time be?
|
depends where the server is and where you are pinging from
|
every 3min. should do the trick

Ping times are related to where you are in relation to the server.
Ignore ping times because most hosts filter or de-prioritize them at the router level. We treat ping traffic as un-important, and thus our router rate-shapes pings and drops them intentionally. The reason for this is mainly because alot of script kiddies like to do ping flooding and broadcast ping flooding/ala Smurf attacks on servers, which causes major problems when pings are not controlled. It would be best for you to worry about last hop packet loss and general connectivity rather than a ping time. Utilities like MTR in linux are good to trace the route and monitor packet loss on all hops. :-) SplitInfinity Networks would love to host you, let me know if we can be of service. |
