Cigarette makers telling people not to smoke??

Ok so cigarette makers are smart; they have market cigarettes as 'cool'. But who has seen the commercial from philipmorris (one of the biggest cig makers in the world) where they tell people about how to quit smoking and the healthrisks. They even give a website for who need help quiting (www.philipmorrisusa.com). This is what they come up with in their brain storm, remember this is the same company that in 1979 made a big thinktank to make cigs 'cool' in which they succeeded. In the brain storm they even talked about putting gum and other bullshit in the cig packs to make it appealing to the younger youth.

What kind of a business tatick is this?? :1orglaugh Discuss.

asuna 02-28-2005 07:03 PM

it just to quiet down all the protesters, they know they can tell everyone to stop smoking, doesn't mean they will listen, some will, and some won't

Spunky 02-28-2005 07:04 PM

So everybody and their brother doesn't sue their ass

UniversalPass Pete 02-28-2005 07:05 PM

That's like porn stars telling people not to fuck! :pimp

thaifan99 02-28-2005 07:08 PM

This big class action has got them scared again.......they ,ight actually lose this one

Babagirls 02-28-2005 07:12 PM

1) Smokers arent gonna quit because of a commercial. its like a crackhead quiting because he saw a "Just Say No" ad...it just doesnt work. Smokers quit when they WANT to, not when they're TOLD do. and the cig companys know this. (they know all the little facts about smokers)

2) To shut up protestors and to SEEM like they "really care", especially with all those commercials about "TRUTH" that are out now (where people go to these companys' buildings and start talkin shit about them.

Actual SECRET 1979 Big Tobacco brainstorm session script.

CUT TO SEVERAL BUSINESSMEN SITTING AT A TABLE.

TOBACCO EXEC: So, any new product ideas for our younger tobacco chewers?

MAN 1: We've discussed producing a fruit flavored tobacco.

SFX: LAUGH TRACK

TOBACCO EXEC: Perhaps we can compare data with Life Savers candies.

SFX: LAUGH TRACK FROM "AUDIENCE"

MAN 2: Would it be possible to include bubble gum in the package?

SFX: LAUGH TRACK

MAN 3: We could surround the tobacco itself with a sugar coating ... sugar coating -- like a ...

MAN 4: ... like a tobacco gumball!

SFX: LAUGH TRACK / APPLAUSE

They dont give a flying fuck about anyone. All this commercial does is keep feeding kids that cigs are bad and if you want to rebel against your parents please smoke up. They are smart buisness people. From now on we should just rename lungcanver and name it philipmorris.

:BangBang: philipmorris

Wizzo 02-28-2005 07:24 PM

It was part of the govt. settlement, they have to make those commericals, along with a few other requirements and in return no one is allowed to sue them anymore... :pimp

tungsten 02-28-2005 07:26 PM

i just saw their ads recently, quite a tactic actually

wargames 02-28-2005 07:27 PM

It's like a shoemaker telling a consumer not to wear shoes. :1orglaugh

xlogger 02-28-2005 07:34 PM

Another GAY brainstorm; in which they sold and marketed "light" cigarettes but they are as strong as the normal ones. No difference at all!! This one actually backfired, one lady got cancer and she sues and won like $650M..ROFL!! :1orglaugh

It's not about getting people to quit smoking, they let the product itself retain customers. The ads supposed to deter kids from picking up the habit. Unfortunately, getting kids to start smoking is what it's all about for them, always has been. From Joe Camel to the new pineapple flavored cigarettes they have. I mean, smokers want their smokes to taste like smoke, pineapple cigs serve no purpose other than appealing to 11-16 year old kids.

That's why they don't care about making anti-smoking ads, they know the type of kids who start smoking are the kind who don't listen to what they're told by "authority" figures. If anything, the more anti-smoking ads, the more likely these types of kids will take up smoking. As long as they keep paying Hollywood exec's to make the "cool" characters smoke, kids are doomed.

No. It's like porn stars telling people not to have unprotected sex w/ people they don't know.

xlogger 02-28-2005 07:47 PM

You cant ban cigs all together. Remember when was alcohol banned completely? It just wont work. Making commercials dont work, telling people not to smoke makes them smoke more. Looks like we cant put a stop to cigs. :warning

Well maybe if we make them 'uncool'. Thats impossible.

Doctor Dre 02-28-2005 07:57 PM

Here in canada there are anti smoking ads on every pack of smoke ... big ones

xlogger 02-28-2005 07:59 PM

well thanks fuckers, this was an essay i was looking to do in college, needed some imput. Rich your post was the best one, i will use that for sure. :thumbsup

What if we market porn as 'cool' like these cigarette companies did. Imagin the impace on the our porn community. That will take us to another level. People addicted to porn, imagin that ( some people already are though :1orglaugh ).

mcmc 02-28-2005 08:01 PM

as long as they sell it, they dont mean it :2 cents:

QuaWee 02-28-2005 08:01 PM

Backfired? 650 million is chicken feed for big tobacco. On the other hand, hundreds of thousands if not millions of people have "cut back" to lights or extra lights instead of quitting. And as you said, they're basically just as bad for you as regulars.

The devil is assisting them

Rep 02-28-2005 08:45 PM

philip morris still gets to promote their brand and looks good in the public eye, win-win.

xlogger 02-28-2005 08:50 PM

Based on a 1994 Big SECRET Tobacco brainstorm script.

Quote:

*SEVERAL BUSINESSMEN SITTING AT A TABLE*

TOBACCO EXEC: The image of tobacco should be cooler and more youthful. Any ideas?

MAN 1: Let's focus on targeting trend setting "hipsters".

TOBACCO EXEC: "Hipsters," yes. Young people will follow these "hipsters" in hope that they themselves will become "hipsters."

MAN 2: But how does one reach these trend setting "hipsters?"

MAN 3: We could go to trendy bars and have trendy restroom attendants distribute our product! We could even have field offices dedicated entirely to preserving our trendiness!

MAN 4: With a properly coordinated marketing effort, we could be trendy by next fiscal year.

xlogger 02-28-2005 09:02 PM

Yeah, win-win for Phillip AND Morris.

The government should start charging a $20 tax per pack. That's the only thing that works.

I keep forgetting this 2 party system.

That they would let PM advertise their brand at all is pathetic.
