US Pushes UN on Abortion Declaration

UNITED NATIONS (AP) -- Ten years after the world's nations pledged to achieve equality for women, a follow-up meeting has become embroiled in controversy over a U.S. demand that its final declaration state that women are not guaranteed the right to abortion.

In informal consultations ahead of Monday's meeting to take stock of progress in implementing the landmark platform adopted at the 1995 U.N. women's conference in Beijing, the United States raised the abortion issue as a first order of business.

The U.N. Commission on the Status of Women, which organized the high-level meeting, had hoped the two-week session would focus on overcoming the roadblocks to women's equality in 12 critical areas from health, education and employment to political participation and human rights.

But the dispute over abortion is likely to dominate the headlines and the closed-door debate on the final declaration.

Abortion should be mandatory in the US : would result in less idiots in the world....

And one wonders why the rest of the world thinks little of silly Americans. We're 50 years behind Europe on social issues.

My theory is that the average number of people per square mile is so much higher in Europe that Europeans are forced to learn to get along and figure out how to live in such close proximity without choking each other.

Meanwhile we in America have wacko militias stockpiling weapons on their zillion acre farms in Idaho.

The two organizations that have been proven to be crooked in the last few years have been the U.N. and the democratic party. The big three media outlets have forgotten to report on this.

I always wonder why democrats allow themselves to side with entities that are in driect competition with the United States of America.

You are asking the United States to endorse something that the majority of its citizens have voted against. That doesn't sound right!

The majority has spoken. If the U.N. doesn't like it, they can leave. Same for you.

People left Europe and started this new country because of the failed social issues. Our country is working pretty good since then. I would say you have that backwards.

53% of people in the US voted against Bush.

because of your stupidity and ignorance... i think the age of abortion should be moved up to 35 or so, to help cull your ilk from the herd.

So why doesn't yours?

And by the way, your statement that you do not mind disagreement is a flat out lie. Your entire argument is based on the supposition that abortion is a moral practice. Anyone who disagrees is apparently stupid or out of touch. Can you explain that position, and how it doesn't conflict with your being so "open minded" about disagreement?

Probably best if you just run home right now and hide in front of the TV. You've really walked into a buzzsaw here. :1orglaugh

Fine with me. Nobody forces them to get an abortion....

But I presume that " some people that dont believe in abortion or in killing innocent people " are not talking about them, but want to prevent others to do so....

I said "moral practice" as in "morally acceptable". If you're implying that there is a moral debate about abortion only in the US, well it's self-evident that you have your head up your ass.

Now, since the above two quotes indicate that you are unwilling to stick to an argument, let me just take the opportunity now to point out another GLARING contradiction in your statement, and an implied hypocrisy contained therein. You are in favor of abortion as a means of birth control, but you decry civilian casualties in war -- ipsofacto, you are contradicting yourself in terms of the value of human life.

Now for the hypocrisy: your stance on these two issues in relationship to each other are simply mirror images, the reverse you might say, of "This admintration and it's phony morality".

So not only are you closed-minded, you're hypocritical as well. Better get that TV Guide dusted off.

alexg 02-28-2005 12:53 PM

Good point. I guess "they" think a fetus isn't equal. Southern slave owners in the US used that argument about blacks. Nazis used that argument about Jews and homosexuals, and all kinds of people. Now the "femi-Nazis" are using it about fetuses to defend a barbaric form of birth control.

And let me be clear here about my stance on abortion. I am opposed to abortion when it is used to terminate unwanted pregnancies where there is no danger to the mother's health. That is murder. Any woman who has had an abortion because "they weren't ready for a child" will secretly acknowledge that opinion if they remember how they felt after the procedure.

When there is danger to the mother's health, I am not opposed to it.

I agree with that 100%. I think you will find most people do when they have it explained to them like that.

That would be my guess. But one has to remember that a fetus has absolutely NO business developing inside the womb of a woman who is isn't prepared to be a mother. So I suppose that must be a capital crime against society. At least the U.S. Supreme court equates it thus. :pimp

I absolutely agree. The US has no obligation to follow any international conventions - as long as they don't sign it.

If you don't want to hear "liberal pussies" complain that the US is in violation of legislation - such as the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (which describes how a goverment is to treat it's own citizens), the Geneva Conventions (which describe how a government treats citizens of other countries), the Bretton Woods Agreement (international economic order), several WTO rulings (the administration of the new international economic order) - then your presidents shouldn't sit down and sign these agreements.

I should have broken that up into more than one sentence.
