Dish network or Direct TV? What should I get?
I'm 30 years old, and I've never had cable... and now I'm ready... Which one should I get? and why?
|
Cable has nothing to do with the satelite providers you mentioned.
|
Cable, digital, satelite, whatever. I've never had it before. Those two companies are the ones I see ads for, and so I checked them both out but they seem to be pretty much the same so I figured I'd ask here.
Any more losers wanna point out that I don't know what I'm talking about? |

I don't want ANYTHING that has ANYTHING to do with Sports, Religion, or home shopping on my channels.
|
Get a DishNET 180 package w/ a 522 DVR reciever.
|
sattelite not so good if you using shell or just need fast responce
250+ ms delay from sattelite - one way systems. |

And of course Sopranos, and Penn and Teller's BullShit. Discovery shows are ok too. National Gegraphic shows are good. No Crocodile hunter though or any other show where some jackass chases animals around. Not that I care about the animals, it's just those guys annoy me. |
Go with Direct TV, why? well I really don't know but I use them and there service is very good. I never been with Dish Network but never really heard anything bad. A buddy down the street showed me his Direct TV with the Sunday ticket and the TiVo system and I was sold on that.
BTW, I think you get more bang for your buck at Direct. OH, and for the rumors about it going out during the rain BULLSHIT... |
Direct TV and get their Tivo service added... fuck I am hooked on that shit...

I looked thru the packages and all I really want from DirectTV is the basic package (total choice with local) and add HBO and Showtime. I'd want the same with Dish, but on their site it doesn't say how much it costs to add HBO and Showtime or even if you can add it to the base package at all. I npoticed that on Dish if you go from the 60 channel to the 180 channel all the do is add 100 music channels. I HATE MUSIC! I don't even have a radio in my truck, why would I want it on my TV? I'm kinda leaning towards Direct TV as it is, bu weren't they under investigation awhile back for some kind of fraud? Or was that DISH? Or a 3rd company? |

oh this post isn't about my shopping? can't help you with the cable I have basic with the ghetto HBO hook up :winkwink: |

As for the fraud, you got me. It's either another company or very old issue or one of those news stories that got by me... Get the TiVo and watch out for those deals from the local installers on the free boxes. Direct will charge you $4.95 for every additional box. You can get the boxes as back up or whatever just when you need them call Direct and there on within seconds. The very cool thing with Direct TV is when you call them to add or delete stuff it is instant. You don't go through the whole wait a week to have some guy come install a fiter on your line... Billing is automatic, they don't send a bill and want your CC number so I just gave them the AMEX so I can earn points :2 cents: |

Definitely get Directv with DVR. Its the shit :) I have it with total choice and locals and have never failed to find something on any time of day or nite that I wanna watch. Cant say ive ever had that when ive had cable. I think Dish network gets ya sucked in with the lower price and no commitment thing but lookk at the channel offerings. Only 60 I think. But Directv gives ya over 100 fora commitment. And the DVR service fucking rocks. I checked the other nite and I already have 39 shows on Season pass. lol As for movie channels, I think the packages start at 12 bucks each and get cheaper the more packages you add. I had a blast with the free Starz weekend a couple of weeks ago. Ended up recording about 20 movies.
|
I have dishnetwork but I suppose directv is cool.
One of the cool things about satellite is that you can make a favorites list so you don't have to even see undesirable channels. |
Also keep in mind, I think the Directv dish has to be pointed to the south. That might be an issue if you are in a living space where theres no unobstructed path that direction.
|
It's soo nice to see you!
:) |
I like direct tv because you can put the show you are watching in a little window and watch and hear it while you surf the guide to see what else is on.
If you a fan of the NFL or any sports. Direct TV has those packages. |
Both systems have exactly what you want...........so for you they would be indistinguishable............both are also loaded with movie channels and all the hbo, showtime, starz, etc etc as well as lots of PPV, but the PPV's are basically the same.

QUOTE] I liked that too with my old reciever but it doesnt have it on the DVR Box....Damn them! :1orglaugh |
hey man, I currently have both of them for a few more months. I just got DTV HD and love it. HD is great, I know that discovery HD is a channel that you can get. Right now they are running a special where you can get FREE HD Package for 3 months, FREE ENCORE/HBO for 3 months. Along with all your other stuff. Music channels are a lot better on Dish Network just because they have Sirius radio. Also, if you are into sports, and especially NFL. You will want DTV and Sunday Ticket. Anything else, just ask :)

Here's another vote for DirecTv. I've never had Dish so I can't compare the two, but I've had DirectTv for about 6 months now and I love it. I opted for the Total Choice Plus with local... I have it on 3 TV sets one with the dual tuner Tivo. That is great because you can record two shows on at the same time. Don't know if Dish has that option... As far as outtages, I've only ever lost the picture in SEVERE weather like thunderstorms and it is generally out for less than an hour even then. Be warned... DirecTv is raising all their prices about $3 a month in a few weeks... so I don't know if you can "lock in" at the lower rate now or not...
|
DirecTV user here. Switched from cable and like the service better. Never had a problem with reception in weather. Basic package is about $60 per month. I do not do the movie channels. I would rather just do a pay-per-view when I feel like watching.
|
I say directTV their support is great and they have great deals on getting you join them. When i joined i got 4 receivers all the channels for 3 months and the only catch was i had to pay the $80/month for nfl sunday ticket. Now i get every channel and it's only $100/month. I highly recommend them even though i've never had dish network i have absolutly no reason to leave directTV.
