Is this legal?

DVD swapping and rental
Surely they would need a licence for some of those studios in order to "rent" them out??

No.

Go directly to jail, do not pass go, do not collect $200 :winkwink:

It is as long as they keep up the front that the membership fees are for the shipping and handleing fees.

Its as illegal as trading porn DVDs with a friend on a lonely saturday night. They arent making money on it, or so they say. So technically it is perfectly legal.

So i could charge surfers a yearly fee for joining and postage for each title i send out by buying a private copy of each DVD that is licenced for "private use only?" :disgust

It doesnt work as p2p. The difference is that each DVD was paid for by the membersAnd traded amongst themselves. Wereas with p2p it was the trade of unpaid for stuff amongst users.

Get what I'm saying? I havent gone into this with great detail, but Im pretty sure that its just a swapping service. The swapping company isnt providing the content, just brokering the swaps.

You havent read a copyright notice on a video / dvd trailer have you?

You might want to and actually pay attention to the small print ;)

On the contrary, I am quite familiar with copyright law. But I am always interested in learning more. So I have looked around copyright.gov for the last 10 minutes or so, and havent found anything that says this is illegal, barring resale. Which to my knowledge this site doesnt do.

I am not saying you're wrong at all. But is there anything you can link me to to prove that you aren't? Just interested is all.
