No way, these guys get paid $50/hour anyway, unless they do something extra like give you free cable there's no reason to tip them.

should you tip the tow truck driver? http://bbs.gofuckyourself.net/board/wink.gif

No tip!

Actually I tried to tip my cable guy a few weeks ago and he refused to accept it (saying that they're not allowed to accept)
Maybe that's a new trend.

ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS

Tip the cable guy. Trust me, it has never failed to provide me with benefits. Tip them FIRST if you want.

Don't tip the Alarm guy - he has your code and if he thinks you have the green he might be back (when you are not there.)

In fact, wear your lawn-mowing clothes and clutter up the house when he comes over.

Just a thought...

Fuckit - why am I in here and not working?

sky9x 12-06-2001 02:16 PM

So why the hell do we not tip a guy who comes out and installs a satellite dish for us (which takes a while and he has to come to our house), but we're supposed to tip a guy who spends 1 minute valeting a car 50 yards? Or the fucking kid at Starbucks who shoots caffeine into our coffee. He's supposed to get a tip? It's all fucked up if you ask me.

I tip waiters, barbers, and any kind of delivery person since they had to find your place and use gas. Valet guys are lucky to get a dollar from me. That's the easiest job in the world.

Hell, what kind of cable people do you have coming to your house. I've had many come to my place, but I never got any special bonuses. I guess that I should start tipping heavily, he he he.

Slick 12-06-2001 02:26 PM

How much do you tip at a restaraunt ? I usually leave 15% behind. Depending on the service.

sky9x 12-06-2001 02:28 PM

I was a waiter for a little while so I never leave less than 15% unless the service was horrible. Most of the time I do 15-20%

I overtip at restaurants and for pizza/chicken delivery drivers 'cause I've had those jobs and I know how much they suck, but only if they deserve it. I also left a penny behind one time for waitress who gave the worst service in the history of the world - in restaruant folklore a penny is worse than no tip at all. http://bbs.gofuckyourself.net/board/smile.gif

Dualcpu 12-06-2001 02:35 PM

It is not appropriate to tip cable guys as they have a normal salary unlike valet parking employees and maids in restaurants/hotels.
Those receive a lower salary which is compensated with the tip money they get from customers.

Give the guy a BJ, and make his day.

sky9x 12-06-2001 03:02 PM

Well even if the valet guy is paid less because he gets tipped, that's not my fault. I'm paying $3+ ALREADY just for someone to park my car for me, which I would rather do myself in the first place!

I tip barbers but I don't think I should have to. Even at a cheap place like Supercuts, you're still paying $15 for a 10 minute haircut. That's $90 an hour! And I'm still supposed to tip? $90 an hour isn't enough for someone to clip some hair?

I was a waiter too and I always tip Way too much, more like 25-30%, because I remember how much the public sucks.

If the tax in your stae is %5, then just look at the tax on the bill and multiply it by 3 and there is the amount you should tip

big perm 12-06-2001 03:14 PM

i will agree with scarab. tip the cable guy!
having worked for comcast doing cable modem installations, if i got tipped i made sure they were hooked up right.
i have even gone as far as to take my ladder back off the truck, climb my ass up the pole and give someone free HBO after getting a nice tip.

if your not going to grease the palm at least offer something cold to drink, like beer. http://bbs.gofuckyourself.net/board/smile.gif

didn't you guys ever see the cableguy?

one time i was late to an install, the guy opens the door and yells "you're late", then slams the door in my face. i made sure i circled that prick's address. over the course of the last three years i have cut his cable 6 times and am planning a special interuption for superbowl sunday in january.

i'll get over it sooner or later.

Fuck YES you tip the cable guy. And anyone else in a similar position. Make $50 an hour???? I don't think so. (and that's not a guess) Those guys generally get paid by the job. Try $25 per job. Average is between 3 and 5 jobs a day. Any of them that are on an hourly payroll, are making about $10 an hour.

Tip the fucking cable guy. He might actually give a shit about the signal strength you're getting. (or NOT getting)

My dad owns a salon and has been cutting hair for 20+ years. His cheapest cut is $40 for short hair and it only goes up from there, but he gets 20-25% tips AND his customers send us goodies for Christmas. http://bbs.gofuckyourself.net/board/smile.gif Since he's self-employed he relies on tips to make the bulk of his *real* income (the rest goes to overhead like rent, products, etc.), so he talks with every customer, gets to know them and their family, and makes them comfortable so they come back again and again. The kids at Supercuts don't know how to do this, they just got out of Beauty School and are trying to get you out of the chair without cutting your ears off. http://bbs.gofuckyourself.net/board/smile.gif

That fabulous supercutter you shell out the big bucks to gets a minimum hour wage and some additional perks after working there in six month increments.

I get amazingly gracious and loving service everywhere I go. You know why? Because I treat service professionals with respect and I tip them as generously as I can. I get free stuff and special seating and sometimes I don't have to pay at all, but I ALWAYS tip.

OK I understand tipping waitresses and so on...
It's hard work with little pay.

But what about the guy that's in front of the hotel with a line of cabs 3 feet away from him and all he has to do is wave his hand and one comes.

Well #1 you tip the valet guys, and the coffee shop guys because in most cases they are making min. to a few $'s above min. wage vs the service reps that visit your house who make well above min. wage.

In my opinion I think everyone should have to work on commission which can include a tip.

You'd see customer service ratings shoot through the roof...and for those who don't give a shit about their c.s...well they won't be in biz long because they won't be able to afford it.

i dont get the point with tipping. where i come from you get good service without tipping, and if you get bad service, you dont come back ...

but then again, if you work 8 hours a day on minimumwage here, you make enough to live a decent life..

BrettJ 12-06-2001 05:49 PM

I'm big into tipping -

I tip if I think the next time I stop thru the store they will remember me
OR
if the service is soo good that it warrants it.

In the first case - it buys better service the next time.

In the second - it serves it's intended purpose of showing appreciation for a job well done.

hair - 25%+
restaraunt avg 30%
valet - 1-2 bucks
bellhop - 1-3 bucks
doormen - 1-3 bucks (it's a novelty)

i think service workers that make house calls should be tipped.

I agree. Always tip when you can. Tipping is one of the greatest returns on investment I've EVER experienced. It makes life so much better.

Steve 12-06-2001 06:03 PM

Tip, tip often, and tip a lot.

Tip the mailman, tip the mechanic working on your car, tip the delivery guy, tip anyone who you want to do a good job.

I think webmasters are forgetting why we do this job - because the pay sucks in the "real" world!

I loved getting tips at any job I had. Believe me, it made a difference in how I took care of people. I remember guys bitching about this one old man who tipped us a quarter (25 cents!) when we delivered to his store. I said if everyone tipped me a quarter on my route, I'd have a free lunch everyday. It all adds up.

Companies might charge $50 - $100/hour for a service. No fucking way does the employee see that.

Amputate Your Head 12-06-2001 06:03 PM

Well, from my experience... I've been on both sides.

I've had more than one occupation that I could accept tips, and I'll tell you first hand that I give a whole lot better service to people who tip, regardless of the amount, than to cheap bastards who can't spare a fucking dollar. I've gone back and done extra stuff for people who tip. I've given stuff away to people who tip. And the one's who don't, get what they pay for and that's it. Thank you very much, and don't let the door hit you in the ass on your fucking way out.

From the other side, I tip anyone in a service position. It's not so much about the extra buck than it is about showing appreciation & acknowledgement for their services. And it DOES pay off. People remember shit like that. And if you're so broke that you can't spare a few bucks for a valet or someone, then you probably shouldn't be at a place that has valet parking in the first place.

Maybe you live in some rural area where valets seem like a fancy luxury, but here in L.A. they're everywhere, and in places that they aren't needed. Like if I want to go buy some VHS tapes at The Good Guys, I have to go into a small parking garage where I'm forced to pay for a valet to park my car not farther away than I could throw his tip. Do you feel like paying $3 for valet parking and then $2 to tip a guy that moved your car 20 feet, when all you wanted to do is buy a $5 pack of tapes?

Try San Francisco. L.A. has nice big wide streets and all kinds of places to park. Been there, done that. Come on up to SF and I'll show you the meaning of "No fucking place to park".

All right, you win. SF is much harder to park in than LA. But that's not really the point. My point was just that valets aren't just something rich people use. Sometimes you're forced to use them in rediculous situations. And to have to tip for something you don't even want or need seems weird to me.

kane 12-07-2001 03:51 AM

everytime people start talking about tipping I think of Mr. Pink from the movie Reseviour Dogs and how he went off about tipping and I have to agree with him. I only tip waiters/waitresses and then only because I have to . . .well I guess I don't but if I ever want to go back there I better http://bbs.gofuckyourself.net/board/smile.gif

Here is my philiosophy:

I've had tons of shitty low paying hard work jobs that for whatever reason society hasn't deemed tip worthy. I live in Oregon and for some reason we are not allowed to pump our own gas. so I have worked at gas stations pumping gas. The place I worked we washed every windshield on every car ( unless it was raining) and in the year and half I was there I got tipped one time. Why isn't that job worthy of tips? A waiter takes an order and delivers it. The gas pumper does the same only he has to stand out in the rain and heat and cold ect. I worked for radio shack for a while and every day 15 people would come in looking for some kind of "connector" or " thing" That I would spend 20 minutes figuring out for them just so they could buy a 79cent part and go on thier way and they never tipped me. So I say fuck it! If a waiter/waitress is good I will tip good. There are a few places I go to regularly so I tip good there, but if I'm somewhere I don't normally go and the service sucks I leave little or no tip. I don't complain because I dont want someone to piss in my soup, I just don't tip. When I go get my hair cut I leave tip because I like her and she does a good job ( but I have been other places then the place I normally go and have gotten a bad haircut that they knew I was unhappy with and they still stood there waiting for a tip)

So this may make me an asshole but I say fuck it! If people don't think they make enough money at their jobs without tips then they should get better jobs. I agree that the public are assholes, I've worked with them on many occasions but these people waiters, cables guys, barbers, valets, they are getting paid a wage to do there job and we shouldn't have to tip them just for because they did it.

anyway, that's my 2 cents
