Do you put your REAL PHONE NUMBER on your domains whois?

If so, what kind of calls do you get? Do you ever get surfers harassing you? Would it be better to have a bullshit number rather than a real number? I thought about getting a cheap Vonage line for domains and to give to sponsors so their idiotic account reps can call me on something other than my cell phone. That really pisses me off when they call me at 9:00 PM when I'm trying to relax and play some xbox or am sitting down to eat.

ssp 02-23-2005 07:07 PM

Company phone numbers yes. Nobody ever calls though.

Steen2 02-23-2005 07:08 PM

I put in the company 800 # or company local #

d00t 02-23-2005 07:26 PM

I think we all get enough telemarketing calls as it is....

The Heron 02-23-2005 07:41 PM

I put in real info, it is the law. If you are worried about phone calls maybe you should get a job at mcdonalds

Illicit 02-23-2005 07:43 PM

I get calls offering to develop my super elite domains

tungsten 02-23-2005 07:44 PM

i put my real phone, no calls though, im happy

TheMob 02-23-2005 07:44 PM

why don't you just DomainByProxy your domains, like me?

Spunky 02-23-2005 07:45 PM

Yes indeed I do..I never answer the phone anyways

jimb 02-23-2005 07:45 PM

I select the option from Godaddy.com to have a proxy contact info, this way people dont spam/annoy me.

You might want to try a free voicemail number from eVoice.com if you don't mind getting messages by email.

Young 02-23-2005 07:50 PM

i register at namecheap and take advantage of their free WHOIS guard for domain names that I think I might need it on.

I had outdated contact information on one my godaddy registered domain names. Apparently a "buyer" was interested in my domain name, he contacted GoDaddy and reported that my information was false. Almost lost 4 domain names do to it.

All my info is updated once every couple of months now.

I think it would be considered a breach of the registration agreement terms (and you may lose your domains), but nothing against the law. It's like staying at a hotel. You may have a 12:00 Noon checkout time, but if you're late in moving your ass out of the room, the Hotel Police are not going to come and take you away to jail. The worst thing that will happen is the hotel will bill you for another night's stay and possibly a housekeeping employee will give you a dirty look.

:winkwink:

BVF 02-23-2005 08:34 PM

I have an $8 a month voicemail box and I've never gotten a message from a surfer on it. It's

Voicemail with a PO Box and you will have no worries.

flashfire 02-23-2005 08:36 PM

I dont give anyone my real phone number, except close friends

V_RocKs 02-23-2005 08:40 PM

I don't give a fuck...

TheSaint 02-23-2005 08:52 PM

I use a voicemail number then sends me an email. I get 2 or 3 telemarketers a month, you know, the idiot search engine people. Innoport.com is the shits - for a few bucks a month I get virtual fax and email arriving by email.

Top Jimmy 02-23-2005 08:54 PM

Virtual number from vonage. If calls become a problem simply disable it, and setup a new one.

You're an idiot. First of all, there is no such law. Second, what would getting phone calls have to do with McDonalds?

By the way, GFY is for webmasters. You obviously have no business being here.

well the funny thing is that I attempted to contact the same guy about his domain name (I have domain name ending in _ _ _ _ _fitness.com and he had _ _ _ _ _ fit.com) and his contact info was wrong. But he had some obscure registrar so I just gave up trying to get in contact with him. But I was ready to rat out the fucker too...he ripped off my name  and beat me to the short version.

kuthi123 02-23-2005 10:08 PM

i always use protectfly (registerfly) so no one know my phone number

Dirty Dane 02-23-2005 10:45 PM

I had some anti-porn people calling me at nights. It was funny first time, but not every night. So now I use whoisguard protection. Its worth a good night sleep....

0000000000000000000001000 02-23-2005 10:52 PM

Yes, I do.

emthree 02-23-2005 11:52 PM

I've had a few 212 numbers call me, but that's about it.
I guess surfers in the area wanted to hit me up.

xlogger 02-23-2005 11:56 PM

NOP!

all you have to do to get some ones homes adress is to put the # in google and it will give you a mapquest, i dont think anyone wants to rick that.

(put your # in google, you will see it tells the adress, no need to look in "yellow page" type websites anylonger :1orglaugh )

psyko514 02-23-2005 11:57 PM

I've got my cell phone number there. I get a few calls now and then but nothing too problematic. If I don't know the incoming number, I always let it go to voice mail.
