axelcat 02-22-2005 09:39 PM

Spunky 02-22-2005 09:40 PM

Nice haul..great name as well

tungsten 02-22-2005 09:40 PM

interesting, quite a few bids too

smack 02-22-2005 09:43 PM

damn. i was gonna bid on that too. haha. it was at 3 grand when i was looking at it. should have known it would blow up.

triumph 02-22-2005 09:52 PM

I feel bad for the buyer, the stats are not accurate. It seems several sites link to it to grab the ip address's for their surfers, and it has over inflated the stats. The buyer is definitely going to point to a ppc program or even google adsense, but good luck making that money back in the next 10 years.

i'm pretty sure if they changed their script around a little bit so that wouldn't work, that is would pay off as a long term investment.

B40 02-22-2005 09:57 PM

Wonder if the winning bid was even real

BRISK 02-22-2005 09:58 PM

I question anything that sells on eBay

Was the top bid legitimate?

triumph 02-22-2005 09:59 PM

also the domain name is being sold only, not the site, and the site itself has a number 1 listing on google bringing in a good chunk of the visitors. If they move it to another server and put something new up, they are in danger of loosing their number listing! Either way it is going to be difficult to recover the money from it.

I play the ppc game, and I only buy domains that have type in value, and not traffic from previously running sites! This domain does have type ins, but not enough to justify 386k.

Nevertheless, thanks to the buyer, my domain portfolio value goes up! :thumbsup

1,754,091 uniques per month. Put up an adsense banner. At 5% CTR, that's 87,704 clicks. Say they get a low click rate like $0.20 cents. That's $17,754 per month with just a banner. With a few other products or services, they could make it back relatively quick.

TheSaint 02-22-2005 11:27 PM

I have many remote small offices, all with comcast business dynamic ip.

They all have cron jobs to grab their ip daily from whatismyip.com, so I can assure your you that a good portion of their traffic is hitbot.

Funny thing is its a 1 line php script, so I could care less if it goes away.

TheMob 02-22-2005 11:30 PM

wow, it sold for a lot. i'm sure it will pay for itself though.

kuthi123 02-22-2005 11:39 PM

that is a huge price ,

Agreed 100%!

I checked out all the logs today, and about 85% of the traffic is from hitbots and wget's

TheSaint- Why call a remote site to determine one's own IP address? Just grab the environment from PHP and you'll have the machine's IP and a lot more ... quick, easy, and with no dependence on a remote website.

Or does whatismyip.com do something else that I'm missing ...

Ron

p.s. the buyer, especially if they paid that much, should definitely try to acquire whatsmyip.com (note the missing i), since it's likey a common typo variation.

whatsmyip.com is owned by vertical axis, they dont sell, and dont be surprised if they are the ones that bought it!

I wondered the same thing. This could be done alot cleaner.

What's worse is if the top bid is legitimate, how many of the previous bids are legitimate?

Exactly. I wont be hitting the im feeling lucky button anymore though. :1orglaugh

Nathan 02-23-2005 06:47 AM

Some people keep asking..

the point of the site is to get your ip as it is for the OUTSIDE. The reason is the ever growing number of dsl router users who simply do not know their own ip just by checking internal things.

Of course this is easy to do anywhere, but "whatismyip.com" is so nice to remember and easy to type in. I honestly doubt it will make that kind of $$ back though. People do not go there to click on banners.

.

You need an external web site. In my remote offices the local address is always something like 192.168.1.2 (using nat adressing). Nothing inside the firewall has anyway of getting the real address, so you need an external web site.

Obviously we are not talking about porn servers here that all have static ip.

max140 02-23-2005 07:23 AM

I have used it before as well, time will tell if the sale is "legit"

adonthenet 02-23-2005 07:30 AM
