Does anyone here fly airplanes?

When I was younger my dad signed me up for this thing for youth where you get to meet with a pilot and they take you up in a litle plane and show you some stuff.. been thinking about getting a pilot license..

Jayo 02-21-2005 01:35 PM

Good for you man!

postTopic 02-21-2005 01:38 PM

i wish :) whew.. my childhood dream a pilot!! but im having fun now as a designer so no regrets !

shima 02-21-2005 01:38 PM

Pretty expensive around my part of the world.
But if you like flying, then sure thing, get one.. you never know when you'll need one.
Besides, flying is great!

Mr Pheer 02-21-2005 01:43 PM

I've owned three airplanes.

You like to spend money, then an airplane is a good thing to have, because its worse than a boat as far as maintenance, repairs, and storage fees go.

Theodor S. Geisel 02-21-2005 01:45 PM

I fly airplanes....

I prefer using Copy or Ink Jet quality. I definitely don't like any of that heavy stuff; card stock is out. I haven't flown one in a while, though.

I don't fly but I ended up flying one once on acid comedown it was kinda scary

abadfish 02-21-2005 01:59 PM

I've been thinking about getting my pilots license for the past year (wanted to do it for 7-8 years!) and have joined several orgs and buy a lot of pilot/plane magazines as well as a few books... I am really interested but don't have the time right now to see it through. I want to start training this summer if I can allocate all of the funds and time to get a PPL.

I have a huge interest in it and I know I will do it at some point in my life!

Antonio 02-21-2005 02:05 PM

I wear nappies every time I board a plane, no way I'm going to fly that shit ;)

yamaha 02-21-2005 02:40 PM

I would like to.
to travel far away :helpme

tASSy 02-21-2005 02:43 PM

i got my private rating vfr license, but i am no longer current. it takes a committment to the hours of flight time and book time to get current and after that it's just a matter of staying current. flying itself is pretty easy :) :2 cents:

Cirrus 02-21-2005 02:44 PM

I do..............

sweetME 02-21-2005 03:07 PM

I fly them in my dreams. Does that count?

AsianDivaGirlsWebDude 02-21-2005 10:01 PM

latinasojourn 02-21-2005 10:28 PM

yes, PP, SEL, high perf, and taildragger endorsements, i have about 3000 hrs TT.

have been a pilot and a/c owner since 1986.

you must have reasonably good health (must be able to pass a minimum of 3rd class medical every 2 years and have zero drinking or drug problems, no fainting spells, heart trouble, etc.)

basic training for Private pilot takes about 70 hours average in USA and can cost 6-10K if you don't own an airplane.

the faa has a new sport pilot designation which allows flight of very lightweight 2 seaters (i think the cap on gross weight is about 1400 lbs) that has lessened training and health restrictions.

and as someone here said it ain't so much air that keeps an aircraft aloft, it is money, annual inspections, big insurance, and plenty of red tape.

BUT, having said all that, IF you fly down close to the ground in a small plane you will experience things that other people just never see.

and it will definitely change your life.

If you go forward with it, make sure to find an airfield that isn't too busy. You spend way too much time on the friggin ground with that engine clock running waiting in line to take off. I received my training at Van Nuys Airport, the busiest general aviation airport in the country, if not in the world. You could spend 15 to 20 mins just waiting for clearance to take off. Training must run over 75 bucks an hour now. :Oh crap

khs 02-21-2005 11:13 PM

2 words Crimson Skies

sh33p 02-22-2005 12:48 AM

No, but I'm an executive at an airline. That close enough?

just dont think i have the money quite yet, cool goal for me though hehe

venus 02-22-2005 02:40 PM

There are a couple of ways to learn to fly, one is to pay as you go, thats the best for most people. you pay for each lesson and you go when you want, you can go everyday, once a week or once a month, its all up to you. just open the yellow pages to the airplanes section and then instruction, find an airport close to you and call them.

I hold Commercial tickets for Airplaine, Single-Engine, Land and Rotorcraft (helicopter/recip & turbine), an Instrument ticket, Certified Flight Instructor for Airplane and Helicopter and a Ground Instructor ticket.

Have never owned my own aircraft, other than being one of the originating members of the US Hang Gliding Assn.

Simply go to two or three local airports and talk to some of the schools. Meet an instructor you feel comfortable with and who shows interest in you, not just your $$$. My fixed wing and rotor wing CFIs were two of the greatest friends I ever ended up with.

As for turning it into a business, never did. Just enjoyed it too much.

Have 2600 hours TT PLUS, from working at Johnson Space Center in the early 80s, have two logged/signed entrys for two Space Shuttle re-entrys (Shuttle Simulator on-site). They're right. It does fly like a BRICK! Made one hellova hole in Dryden. LOL

If you have the bucks and the spirit to learn to fly, by all means, go for it. It's an adventure you'll never forget. Especially, your first "solo."

Trade_Monkey 02-24-2005 08:51 AM

Yea sure I do ..... Microsoft flightSimulator ... LOL

sickkittens 02-24-2005 09:11 AM

I'd rather put my time into racing cars or boats.

TheSaint 02-24-2005 09:17 AM

I toyed with it a long time ago, took some lessons and learned to fly but never completed the program. That was back in the day when you could get a Mooney (I think it was called super 21 or something, pressurized cabin, retractable landing gear, variable pitch prop) used for 25K; today thats like a million. My family owned one of those, and a basic cherokee 4 seater in decent condition was like 15 grand.

Then everyone stated suing the aircraft company when they ran out of gas and it all went to shit, very expensive today.

Adultnet 02-24-2005 10:22 AM

go for it this is cool... :)
