Get the fuck out! Read most of his stuff.....he was doing some work for ESPN2, He was the only real journalist - He basically created a real foul and low mood in his articles so when he dropped THE TRUTH it didn't seem as harsh. Imagine, an journalist looking for the truth, and then reporting it!!!

He almost blew up his nemis/source of rage Richard Nixon by smoking next to a private Jet while re-fueling.

The guy rode with the Hell's Angels back when they were hard. Oakland chapter I think, he got stomped which ended his relationship with the angels.

he ran to be Mayor or sheriff of Aspen to basically fight the old money

He really, really liked Wild Turkey and Firearms

If you don't know this guy maybe its time to start reading. I think this guy qualifies as a true patriot and American. (he actually financed his younger brother's college so he could dodge the draft during the Invasion of Korea, despite his brother's hatred of college)

what else to say? He really did a great job of examining his surroundings like he was an outsider, which made is insight extremely accurate. look him up

Movies:

Where the Buffalo Roam
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas

Books:
He has a lot, and correspondance oh - and a wicked article titled "The hammerhead Shark" where he supposes if the Duke were to encounter Thomas Jefferson the Duke would kick the living shit out of that upstart rebel.

and if this ain't true and he's still kicking, check him out anyway he's wicked

viki 02-20-2005 10:14 PM

:(

Highly upsetting.

angelsofporn 02-20-2005 10:15 PM

We stayed his his favorite room at the Chateau Marmont in LA a couple weeks ago...the room where him and the other guys hashed out the Fear and Loathing screenplay. He's was one of my all time favorites. Sad day

Sad day. Anybody that doesn't know who he is, I recommend getting familiar. He was in touch with the rhythm of the world from time to time.

I just found out.. im shocked.. normally this sort of stuff doesn't concern me, celebs dying.. but it's different when a writer dies.. I grew up reading his articles in rolling stone. A sad day indeed.

rickholio 02-20-2005 11:21 PM

Wow... sad day...

In my own pitiful form of tribute, I guess I'll bust out my favorite HST quotation.

This is not a generational thing. You don't even have to know who Richard Nixon was to be a victim of his ugly nazi experiments.

He has poisoned our water for ever. Nixon will be remembered as a classic case of a smart man shitting in his own nest... But he also shit in our nest, and that was the crime that history will burn on his memory as a brand. By disgracing and degrading the presidency of the United States, by fleeing the White House like a diseased cur, Richard Nixon broke the heart of the American Dream.

I don't expect, under the current political climate, that he'll receive an awe-filled hagiography... though I surely believe he deserves one.

Rest peaceful, Hunter. If there's a hell, I'll see you there. :thumbsup

"We had two bags of grass, seventy-five pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high-powered blotter acid, a salt shaker half-full of cocaine and a whole galaxy of multicolored uppers, downers, screamers, laughers.... also a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of Budweiser, a pint of raw ether, and two dozen amyls... but the only thing that worried me was the ether. There is nothing in the world more helpless and irresponsible than a man in the depths of an ether binge..."

colpanic 02-20-2005 11:55 PM

Wow, so sad... crazy mother fucker though.. it was only a matter of time.

I'm really shocked how many people haven't heard of him... Is he just unknown outside of the USA?

AsianDivaGirlsWebDude 02-21-2005 12:23 AM

Rip Hst

I just read the news that Hunter S. Thompson took his life today.

Not much makes me cry anymore, but I was truly saddened upon learning of this event. Sad and angry too, as I was when Kurt Cobain took his life.

For those of you who don't know who HST was, please go out and get one of his books, and be prepared for a trip unlike any you have experienced before.

Hunter was the inventor of "Gonzo Journalism". For those of you who know what gonzo porn is, and I think that is most of you, just translate that to literature, keeping in mind that literature is a substantially higher art form.

How ironic that the first HST book I read (back in the 60's), "Hells Angels", was also the last one I read just a year or so ago. It was witty, inventive and satirical, and it was also ballsy, in your face reality, both when I first read it, and again when I rediscovered it decades later.

HST took you places few writers have taken people before, and created a new form of writing along the way.

I had the opportunity to meet Hunter once, when I sponsored him to speak at my University (circa 1982). It was an event few who attended will ever forget. HST arrived wearing his trademark poker visor, puffing on a cigarette through his ever present 10" long cigarette holder.

His contract rider called for a bottle of Wild Turkey whiskey and a pitcher of ice water - with that in place, he took his seat, and without delivering the expected lecture, he simply asked the audience what they wanted to talk about.

Over two hours of spontaneous Q&A transpired, which was just as Hunter's writing was - pure, uncensored, and completely off the wall humor and analysis about the most serious issues of the day.

After the lecture was over, I had Hunter sign the ten or so books of his that I had brought along which he did with great patience, appreciative of the people that loved his writing.

He is, and will probably forever be imitated, however he will always be the original...

RIP HST

damn fucking shame

AsianDivaGirlsWebDude 02-21-2005 12:58 AM

In rememberance...

To start to know HST, you could start appropriately enough with his web site:

http://www.gonzo.com/

It's also on most of the news web sites, but that is not how I want to remember him, because most of the journalism corps never understood him anyway.

I think the best way to remember Hunter S. Thompson now is in his own words:

Quote:

I hate to advocate drugs, alcohol, violence, or insanity to anyone, but they've always worked for me.
Quote:

"The Edge... there is no honest way to explain it because the only people who really know where it is are the ones who have gone over."
Quote:

"Get out of control, but appear under control. It's not bad to alarm other people, though - it's good for them."
Quote:

"Groveling is wrong for the soul, like grappling with whores in a drugstore."
Quote:

The music business is a cruel and shallow money trench, a long plastic hallway where thieves and pimps run free, and good men die like dogs. There's also a negative side.
Quote:

"History is hard to know, because of all the hired bullshit, but even without being sure of 'history' it seems entirely reasonable to think that every now and then the energy of a whole generation comes to a head in a long fine flash, for reasons that nobody really understands at the time - and which never explain, in retrospect, what actually happened."
Quote:

When the going gets weird, the weird turn pro.
Quote:

We were somewhere around Barstow on the edge of the desert when the drugs began to take hold. I remember saying something like "I feel a bit lightheaded; maybe you should drive. . . ." And suddenly there was a terrible roar all around us and the sky was full of what looked like huge bats, all swooping and screeching and diving around the car, which was going about a hundred miles an hour with the top down to Las Vegas.
Quote:

"Gonzo journalism is a style of reporting based on William Faulkner's idea that the best fiction is far more true than any kind of journalism - and the best journalists have always known this. Which is not to say that fiction is necessarily 'more true' than journalism - or vice versa - but that both 'fiction' and 'journalism' are artificial categories; and that both forms, at their best, are only two different means to the same end."
Finally. in a 1958 interview HST stated,

Quote:

"Events of the past two years have virtually decreed that I shall wrestle with the literary muse for the rest of my days. And so, having tasted the poverty of one end of the scale, I have no choice but to direct my energies toward the acquisiton of fame and fortune. Frankly, I have no taste for either poverty or honest labor, so writing is the only recourse left for me."

Well, he did write about quite a few American topics, so it's understandable why he wouldn't be as well known internationally.
