Ever get scammed at a bar.

I was at a bar in the East Bay last Friday, Club Mallard, and two guys with thick touchpads were walking around giving out lighters; they only asked for your name and social security number in return.

These guys showed up around 12:30pm when everyone was pretty well lit.

ID theft scam or legit business?

SF

detoxed 02-20-2005 06:29 PM

FunForOne 02-20-2005 06:30 PM

When you walk around the french quarter in New Orleans, there is a scam like that on every block.

When you're pretty drunk and everyone is doing it, you don't think about being scammed.

I don't smoke and thought it sounded phishy.

Spunky 02-20-2005 06:32 PM

Lol..people were probably stupid enough to give it to them

David! 02-20-2005 06:33 PM

They do the same thing in SoFla, usually around 1AM.

So you think it is a scam? A friend got the lighter but doesn't know if he gave the right info.

Furious_Male 02-20-2005 06:35 PM

What would any legit marketing firm need your SS# for. Doesn't sound good.

wes 02-20-2005 06:35 PM

i would give fake info.

I thought it might be a variation on ethical hacking. They don't use the info to setup an ID but sign you up for credit cards, etc.

xlogger 02-20-2005 06:42 PM

HAHAHA, fucking SS#'s? And for a lighters?

pussyluver 02-20-2005 06:44 PM

Always go with the FAKE SS. Do the same on your paychecks at Mickey-Ds. You wouldn't want anyone to know you really flipped burgers would ya?

Philip Morris has reps going out to bars to solicit smokers to get on their mailing lists. Since the govent has made it very hard for them to target smokers anymore. They will give out incentives to smokers (i.e. lighters, free packs) but they must verify age before doing so.

pornstar2pac 02-20-2005 06:50 PM

I fell for that scam 3 times already

Doctor Dre 02-20-2005 06:52 PM

ROFL ... you must be so dumb to fall for this kind of crap

Pete-KT 02-20-2005 06:54 PM

I'm pretty sure they don't need your social security number to give you a free lighter, maybe your birthday but not your SS# :2 cents:

pornstar2pac 02-20-2005 07:04 PM

they asked for my mother's maiden name too

smashface 02-20-2005 07:09 PM

did they ask for your driver's license too? and the name of your high school?

People asking for SS #'s? That doesn't seem right.

reynold 02-20-2005 08:49 PM

That sucks. You need an ID number for a drink. :(

smashface 02-20-2005 09:51 PM

I have about a dozen of the zippos they hand out, they have been hitting the bars in Philly for well over a year now.
