blockbuster is gettin sued

(sorry if re-post)
i knew this was gonna happen, they were saying "No More Late Fees" but thats not really true, so they're being sued for False Advertising.

"Blockbuster boldly announced its ?No More Late Fees? policy, but has not told customers about the big fees they are charged if they keep videos or games for more than a week after they are due,? Attorney General Harvey said. ?Blockbuster?s ads are fraudulent and deceptive. They lead people to believe that an overdue rental will cost them absolutely nothing when, in fact, customers are being ambushed with (a) late fees in some stores, (b) so-called ?restock fees,? and (c) credit card or membership account charges equal to the purchase price of the video.?

Well - there has to be a catch. Otherwise, people will take advantage and keep the movies for months at the time. I dont' have a problem with it myself. I rented a movie the other day and the guy at the counter told me the date that it was due back but then said...."If you need a few days extra - no problem". And, I returned the movie a few days late and it was fine.

From what I understand - if you return the movie a week after the due date you have to pay a $1.50 restocking fee - this is still much less than a full rental. If you return the movie a month late - you have just bought the movie. What's wrong with this? If you keep the movie for a fucking month you deserve to buy the movie because now Blockbuster has lost sales on that movie because your lazy ass didn't bring it back :1orglaugh

Stick To Netflix

UniversalPassLorence 02-19-2005 04:57 PM

I knew it was coming too :)

they almost hosed me. I rented a movie from them about a month ago ( I have netflix so I usually don't rent anymore ) and about two weeks ago I get two letters from them telling me I had rented these two movies and had kept them longer than 7 days past the due date and if I didn't return them by closing on the date posted in the letter they were going to charge me the full retail price of the movies. . . problem was I never rented the movies. So I went down there and asked them what the hell and they insisted that I rented them and never returned them. So I knew that they had video survailence because I was in there once before when some kids ripped off some x-box games and they called the police and told them they had them on survaillence. I tell them " look on your survaillence video. I never set foot in the store on that date. " The jackass didn't belive me so he actually went to the video on the date and time the movies were said to be rented and sure enough it wasn't me. The clerk had manually entered in a phone number instead of a scanning a membership card and had entered it wrong. It just so happened that the number they put in was mine. The guy recognized the people and called them and sure enough they still had the movies and were " unaware" that they had to bring them back within a week of due date.

At least he gave me 6 free rentals but I still wasn't too happy.

So I have a feeling this no late fee thing is going to not work out so well for them.

THere are no more late fees dumbass.

If you keep the DVD/VHS longer than the week they give extra they bill you for the cost of the tape/ THis is fair.

If you return it after the billed you the refund your fee and a $1.25 that they take because the had to go out and buy a brand new tape and etc.

Personally I am very anti-Block Buster for many reasons. The end of late fees is a good idea and yes, of course it is to their benifit or else they wouldn't do it. Why would they give up the revenue of a full rental price if they didn't have to?

The bigger problem in my eyes is that they do seek out movies that have been edited for content. Ever wonder why the movie is 'R' at the theaters but only PG-15 at Block Buster? Ever have the funny feeling that there was suposed to be more to a certain scene?

Not only are they changing movies to effect their overall rating system that ipacts their market share for certain segments, they have always charged more than anywhere else has and their rentals have been for a shorter period of time. WHy would I go there and rent a movie that may have been modified and pay $5.99 when I could go to Movie Gallery and pay $2.99 for the same movie that has not been edited and keep it for a week for $0.99 extra? This kicks ass for video ga,es.

I'm dione ranting. Block Buster can do what they want but I will never darken their doors since I have rented a movie from thwm and Movie Gallery and seen the difference in content and price.

pornguy 02-19-2005 05:16 PM

Can you imagine BB making extra cash that way. I am sure that there is something in the small print.

Haha yep, I saw this coming. I kept asking myself, "How on Earth is blockbuster going to make this new system work?" Now I know. Same old same old.

KittyLix 02-19-2005 05:30 PM

why would adult webmasters (that have access to free porn every day) wanna join up to a porn rental place? lol

The Heron 02-19-2005 06:05 PM

People that can't return a video on time are stupid, they should die.

sicktwistedmedia 02-19-2005 06:22 PM

The new system is bullshit. Every time I go to rent a new movie everything is out because no one brings them back. It's impossible to rent a new release unless you grab it the second they put it on the shelves.

But they have it for sale if you want to buy it...even though you haven't seen it. Some movies, like Donnie Darko, they didn't even order for rent, but the shelves are full of it for sale.

I used to rent movies a couple times a week, but now they're always out of stock. Sounds like a great business model.

EXACTLY!

And they tell you this! Each time I have rented from them this year they have told me that.

FIX01 02-19-2005 07:36 PM

Blockbuster already settled a class action suit a few years ago for their shady late fee practices. They are just a filthy corporation that is only out to remove as much money out of your wallet as they can regardless of ethics. The only reason they are pretending to offer a so called "no late fee policy" is beacuse they are getting their ass handed to them by netflix.

Spunky 02-19-2005 07:37 PM

blazi 02-19-2005 07:37 PM

I knew there had to be some catch also, like the old saying if it sounds too good to be true then chances are it is!
