my trucks engine blew out yesterday

fuckin Ford piece of shit. :(

im a female so i dont know the exact terms of what happend, but the mechanic said a piston went through some kind of rod?? (if that makes sense to anyone..) and it only had 101,000 miles on the damn thing. (its a 1998 Ford F-150)

anyways, looks like either i shell out $3-$4k for a new engine to be replaced or just buy a new truck for another $30k. Im gonna try to just replace the engine though.

Both Ford & the mechanic told me that without the engine workin, the truck isnt worth more than $50 at a junk yard. How can a $30k truck in 1998 become worth NOTHING, thats a hard pill to swallow

:sadcrying

brizzad 02-19-2005 04:30 PM

Sounds like they want you to sell it to them for $50 so they can turn a profit off of it.

tungsten 02-19-2005 04:35 PM

i drove my friends f250 not too long ago, that car is a beast

sorry to hear about your truck though, maybe the people that changed your oil fucked up?

yea, thats what we thought to. the truck (other than the engine, obviously) is in perfect condition (interior and exterior). theres no way in hell Ford would just "junk it". either they'd replace the engine themselves or gut it for all kinds of parts and shit.

spideriux 02-19-2005 04:37 PM

I think you should buy a new engine...

i thought about that but no. the truck started making a strange clicking noise last week, just never got a chance to look into it till yesterday. At first i thought it was just that it was due for an oil change (and it was), so i did that and it still was making that noise afterwards. so i was taking it to the garage and on my way, it sounded like something poped and it was like the engine was choking to just drive.

rollinOn20s 02-19-2005 04:49 PM

Hate to say it, maybe you shouldn't buy a FORD!

dozey 02-19-2005 04:58 PM

heh, the engine threw a rod. Nothing to do with the make of car.

UniversalPassLorence 02-19-2005 04:59 PM

Replace the engine :)

Bodyguard Bill 02-19-2005 05:00 PM

They are full of shit. The truck is worth market value - $5000 for an engine TOPS. New engine isn't a bad thing. Other thing you can do is find a used engine and patch it in if it is in good enough shape.

Furious_Male 02-19-2005 05:02 PM

I love blown engines. Give you a chance to upgrade to something bigger and better. Ford Crate Motors arent that bad.

Prof.Dr. Den 02-19-2005 05:02 PM

i feel your pain, ford sucks, mine engine blowed also a few months ago. germans say: ford ist mord. damn right !

Manowar 02-19-2005 05:03 PM

i've been lookin at rebuilt engines. i just need a decent engine to get me through another couple years, then i'll trade it in for a new one then. so i dont really need a brand new engine (although it would be nice to get).

still checkin around on prices on engines & different shops at what they charge to replace it.

This is suspicious, maybe the mechanic screwed up the oil change? anyway every ford is a piece of crap :)

The only cars ill buy now are hondas or toyotas. Ive been fucked over too many times driving American, they lost me as a customer.

If youre looking for a new suv im renting a Honda Pilot right now and I Fucking love it. I checked consumer reports and its ranked very high.
good luck

Any motor can blow. Fords arent pieces of crap. Thats so 90s. Ford trucks are excellent trucks.

If you have 100k Miles on it It's not worth to put another engine inside.

Take your loss buy a Dakota or something for 13,000.00 for an 02-03 with 20k miles.

The wear and tear on the body frame transmission After the Engine you will be shelling out more money. Clutch Belt/timing belt ect Gaskets.

Buy a new truck and use it as a tax write off

Ford bodies, undercarriages and frames are pretty top notch. I'm sure the body sustained hardly any wear yet

Spunky 02-19-2005 07:40 PM

Rebuild the bottom end and flog it for what you can get

How does it handle? Does it feel top heavy? I was interested in checking one out this summer for fun. I still have the civic for 6 more years though.

I have owned many fords.. Mainly Ford Ranger xlt 2.3L Inline 4.

It died out at 130k miles

Blew head gasket replaced clutch and everything... Not worth it to invest more money into a car that has over 100k Miles.

gecko 02-19-2005 07:44 PM

Smart move, get a new engine.

well she'd be replacing the motor and replacing a clutch is a given at 100k so all in all I'd say it's still worth keeping and dropping a new motor in to get another 5 years out of the thing.

Nismo 02-19-2005 07:58 PM

Listen, I've been around car lots, car dealers and all that my whole life. I have friends who own lots. I know all about that business. Sounds like they wanted you to buy a new truck off their lot and you sell them your truck in its current state for $50. It sounds to be worth atleast $5k.

Do either of the following...
(1) Have a new motor put in and keep it
(2) Have a new motor put in and sell it
(3) Sell it as is - you can probable get around $5k for it; depending on how the condition of the body and interior.

If I were you, I wouldn't ever go to that car lot again.

pushpills 02-19-2005 07:58 PM

We're you being a flaky chick around the oil change jockeys? I've known punks when I was younger to tamper with people they didnt likes cars when they came to get an oil change.

UniversalPass Pete 02-19-2005 08:03 PM

Sorry to hear! you need a rebuild!

It handles great. I doesn't feel top heavy to me, it feels solid all around. But I dont drive very fast on the highway, I do 75 max. I wouldnt go too fast in any suv on the highway anyways.

Im just renting this Pilot until my Camry is fixed, but im considering getting one now because after a week with it I love it. It just feels like its got a lot of muscle and the acceleration is excellent.

Check out consumer reports they have a road test on it

Honda engines tend to have lots of muscle. it amazes me the low rpm HP they get out of those things. After reading your thoughts on it I think I'm going to go test drive one soon for fun.

100k on a ford drops the value to next to nothing
best bet is to replace the engine and get another 100k out of it
either that or drive it into a field, burn it and collect the insurance

SureFire 02-19-2005 08:38 PM

Seems like you just need a recondition short block or if you are lucky enough maybe they can bore it out if the wall is not damage bad.

Either way, I would fix it and then sell it. They are right that it is not worth much right now unless you part it out. I am girl too, and dealerships tend to take advantage of females with options of fixing the car.

Research a bit, ask what extent the damage is and get a few verbal estimates from other shops. Talk with the dealership about their fees and that you think you are are going to have "Joe" do the work (if you do have another mechanic) and I am sure the cost will drop.

Good luck :)

I just bought a sweet Mazda MPV '00 model on EBay

thats REALLY fuckin tempting!! :1orglaugh :thumbsup

the thing that REALLY sucks about this whole thing is that it happend on a Friday after 5pm :( So we have to wait till tomorrow (monday) to get a 2nd opinion, new/rebuilt engine prices and labor cost estimates.

Until we get a new engine, we have a rental car; a Mitsubushi Galant, which is like a clown car compared to our truck :sadcrying

decent car though.......if you're a college student lol :upsidedow
