Jon Gruden of the Oakland Raiders will...

be coaching for Notre Dame next season.

watch.

Unchilled 12-02-2001 03:18 PM

That seems unlikely

stangster 12-03-2001 10:38 AM

Fact: Jon Gruden wakes up everymorning to the Notre Dame fight song.

Fact: Jon Gruden has Notre Dame colors, banners, & "stuff" all over his house.

Fact: Jon Gruden has only 1 year left on his Raiders contract.

Fact: Al Davis is gay. http://bbs.gofuckyourself.net/board/wink.gif

Kimmykim 12-03-2001 10:41 AM

Fact : the Raiders will probably sign Grudin to a long term contract very shortly here.

Unchilled 12-03-2001 11:11 AM

I dunno, they lost to the Cards, that's the ultimate insult.

You said it yourself. He Has at least one more season with the Raiders. Hell, they're good, so are the 9ers. It could be a Battle-of-the-Bays Super Bowl http://bbs.gofuckyourself.net/board/biggrin.gif

Oh yeah, I think Gruden and Steve Mariucci have a sexual relationship.

49ers kick ass. Can you say 35 to zip?

big perm 12-03-2001 11:29 AM

i'll have to disagree with you stangster.
although jon gruden may be a from the area and hum the nd fight song in his head all day long, he is still under contract for one year.

notre dame does not pay well. they feel it is a privilege to coach the team. it is expected that the coach will make his money thru endorsements and public speaking provided the team wins.

lou holtz was under contract in minnesota but was allowed to leave because he specifically had a clause written into the contract stating that if an offer from nd was put on the table he could pursue it.

when has al davis ever backed away from a fight? he still owes shanahan pay from when he was coaching the team. do you think he will let gruden walk away? i don't see it.

kk is on point about him being signed to a long term deal in oakland.

I dunno, it could happen. I know Gruden is treated like the second coming because he turned the Raiders back into a pro football team again, but the career of an NFL coach is often short. At least in one city. The league is built on parity. The best teams pick last on draft day. The best teams get the hardest schedule the next season. There are salary caps that cause teams to lose top players to free agency. And there is profit sharing, so even the shittiest run clubs in weak ass markets get the same amount of money as the best franchises. So Gruden might have a 2-3 year window - at best. Jerry Rice and Tim Brown are old wide recievers, Garner is an old running back, the QB is old. They are old, period. I don't think they can win the Super Bowl this year, and if they act old fast, he's fucked. It's not like the Raiders have been drafting well over the last 5 years. That team is loaded with veteran free agents.

A big time college job, on the other hand, that could be a career. Look at Bo Schembecler, Hayden Fry, Joe Paterno, Bobby Bowden, Steve Spurrier. All had/have long tenures at one place(of course they all won). They get paid big bucks, they don't give a shit about Unions, agents, they have less media coverage, and they get to schedule cream puff schools every year to pad their record. Notre Dame is loaded with rich alumni, it is a good school, and it has a rich tradition. It is also on TV almost every weekend, and national coverage can be a big recruiting factor.

But is Gruden the man for the job? Can he recruit? Because he has to bring in the talent that is going to Colorado, Nebraska, Miami, Fla. St., Florida, Michigan, Ohio State, and all the other programs. The next coach ND hires has to deliver studs, or they are still fucked. They had a good team under Davie, but not enough studs. No game breakers. And without impact plaers, he can wear green and gold pajamas to bed, it won't help. I saw Bob Stoops name on the ND list. If they can get him to leave Oklahoma, they should get him. You already know he can recruit, he can turn around a program, and he can win. With Gruden, you don't know that.

As a Broncos fan, I pray to the gods everynight that Gruden will go to Notre Dame. I also pray that the Broncos wont allow 21 fourth quarter points and lost 21-10, but we all know how that one worked out.

big perm 12-03-2001 11:50 AM

all good points steve. however, i bet most teams would love to have an old jerry rice or an old tim brown. once you start getting into draft picks, etc. you've lost me. the truth is i hate american football. the old man next door listens to the mike & the mad dog show all the time so when i keep him company i pick up a few things. http://bbs.gofuckyourself.net/board/smile.gif

Holy Shit! Man, how I miss that show. I used to want to choke that dumb fuck Maddog while I was stuck in traffic, listening to him flap his yap. Funny thing was, half the time it sounded like his partner wanted to, too. Kind of funny to hear they are still together.

Granted the Bears are a much better team this year, but lets be realistic. Did you see them play the Lion? They looked terrible!

BTW, it is wishful thinking on my part to hope for the 49ers or the Raiders to go to the Super Bowl; but one can always dream. At least the 49ers are very young and talented and have a young and talented QB. As Steve said, the Raiders are old, and I forsee them blending back into the background within 2-3 years. Will be very sad to see Jerry Rice retire.
