i'm going to be buying one when it gets warmer out. if i was you i wouldnt buy anything too powerful for your first bike. i'm getting a 600. before i do anything i'm taking the safety course at my community college, i would suggest taking one in your area.

Start with a 250-350cc bike if it's your first! don't use it for day to day transport! Only use it for sunday rides, and you will lower your risks! :thumbsup

I have been riding for about 25 years, off road or on road! The worse thing is that drivers don't see or respect you on the roads!

I ride a 2004 CBR1000RR, but I have years of experience.

All the newest generation bikes have similiar power/performance. They ride differently though. I suggest you sit on a few different bikes and see what you find most comfortable for you. Don't be fooled by performance numbers .. 1 extra HP doesn't mean shit if your back is sore in an hour.

I highly recommend a riding course, it really is worth it. That being said, you should PROBABLY start with a small bike, like a 400. Since I know you're not going to be in for that (just a feeling), no bigger than a 600. It's plenty of power, arguably too much, to learn on.

Again, find something that appeals to you. I myself like the Honda's, especially the latest generation. I find them light and nimble and the riding position is comfortable for me. The RR undertail exhaust is slick, I love Symetry. The CBR600F4i is a great learner bike. A little more relaxed riding style and a little more forgiving. Roughly the same power as an RR, but not quite as fast. :2 cents:

If you want something cool under a liter, the Ducati 749R is a good choice for a twin, or the Kawasaki ZX6RR for a 4-cylinder. The Yamaha R6 is a nice solid choice also, but they are a dime a dozen.

Quality-wise, the Honda CBR600RR is probably the best of the bunch, but is a tad heavier than it's counterparts.

Are you in the US. I recommend you take a local MSF safety class that will also waive your dmv test requirements. I personally ride a f4i.

You don't want to go above 600cc as your first bike. Riding is experience+your abilities. I see kids getting r1's as their first bike when they certainly don't know how to handle it. If you want to be conservative go with a kawasaki ninja 250cc which u can practice on for a few months and then move up later on to a 600 or 750.

I would also recommend that you don't get a new bike. its not IF you will drop, its WHEN. No point in ruining a new bike's plastics especially when you are a newbie. make sure you get all the right gear helmet(snell-dot), good leather jacket, gloves etc.

Good luck with everything, riding is a awesome experience but also very dangerous. Just make sure you don't go above your abilities as you will most likely end up in a body bag.

If you want to get a 600cc bike, yamaha r6, honda f4i or 600rr and the gixxer 600 are all great bikes but I prefer the honda over the rest :2 cents:

bro hit me up I am a sport bike stunter I ride all the time here is my site http://www.desertvideo.com I also get paid to ride and I think you just need a 600 I personally like gsxr 600's but the zx6 is nice to... either way you really don't need anything bigger... my 600 will take any stock 1000 or busa from light to light... and you really don't need to go 200mph anyways... no need for it.. yeah it's fun but it gets old I like the speed from light to light.... it's all about gearing... I am down 2 in the front and up 12 in the back.. for a total of up 16 which takes away topend but my low end is rediclous

i was jus looking at the bike manual from the dmv online..... i wanna get myself a permit and learn how to ride as well..... but my wife thinks i will kill myself. but i dont give a rats ass, i wanna at least get the permit so i can start learning.

The most important post in this thread is the one telling you to get the training. You've got the cart before the horse.

For the inexperienced rider, a Harley is probably the most deadly bike you can get on. 750 lbs don't like stopping or turning on a dime. 88CI of fuel injection can get away from you quickly.

Besides, you don't BUY a Harley. You BUY the lifestyle. The Motor Company throws in the bike for free. LOL

With sportbikes, it's "how fast you can get there." With Harleys, there is NO "there." There's only the "journey." And that never ends!

Bikes are dangerous and if you've never ridden - I mean really ridden - you need to go with a smaller bike.

Three years ago Lightspeed bought me a bike as a bonus. Although I had owned bikes before, I went with a small Ninja 500. I also took a motorcycle saftey course - in fact, I learned one of the most important things about driving a course, something I hadn't learned on my own or through other courses.

Once I felt better about being on a bike again I upgraded - to a Honda CBRxx 1100. It's the biggest bike I've ever driven but now I'm so used to it anything smaller feels, well, small.

Go with a small bike for at least a year, perhaps two.

Keep in mind that if you have an accident with a car you have a fender bender. An accident on a bike means your going to the hospital - and that's if your lucky.

yeah, i have a 2001 hayabusa, but i've been riding sportbikes for 30 years.

getting the life insurance policy in place before hotdogging with it is good advice, read the fine print to make sure there is not exclusion for motorcycles (many times there is). riding a high power motorcycle is almost nothing like riding a bicycle except both have 2 wheels.

you should take a rider course, understand the physics of hard braking, counter-steering, hanging off, etc. otherwise the results could be lethal.

start with a mo-ped. too many idiots get bikes and don't have a clue of what they are doing. my last 2 bikes have been ducati 748S's, i highly recommend.

after an impact wound on the shin, and a broken Femur. ( in HALF ) and two times on the operating table, I would highly sugguest that you take a riding course.

It is great money is no object, but no need to waste it. Your first bike should be a used 500 or 600cc, well used should say. I guarantee you are going to drop that sucker several times, if not lay it down atleast one time. Your first bike should be light, not super fast, agile, and able to take some abuse. And a 500 or 600 will still be plenty fast for you. You are only going to keep it a few months until you become comfortable on it and have learned your lessons on how to ride and how not to drop your bike. My old roommate got a FZR 600. He pulled away from the curb and it fell over. My other friend got a Camel race bike delivered to his house. it's your first bike right ? I guess you are unexpirienced driver , I'd like to recommend ya (500 cc category ) kawasaki gpz500 , honda cb500 and such.
there is huge difference while you breaking the 500 cc bareer and riding on 600cc+. Take it easy , start slowly, and enjoy your ride.

Don't get more than you can handle if you weight 130-150 start with a 600, 145-160 a 700; and 155-180 a 750; you'll get bored of the power fast once you get used to it, and always go honda or yamahaa as a first bike, don't wate your money until you trade up.

where is the best place to buy used bikes? after reading about dropping them i dont think im going to get a used one even though they are only like $7k. i was looking on ebay locally and they are going for almost msrp.

its hard to sell a bike in the winter so right now its a buyer's market but that will change in a couple weeks

thanks, i looked at traderonline a week or 2 ago and it was just a bunch of people selling 5 year old bikes for a grand under retail. mabye once theres some more on the market the price wont be as bad. there really wasnt much to chose from.

If you are planning to REALLY ride a bike (not just show at your local bar with it) don't go for a sport bike.
Anyways people with sports bikes don't ride, too hard on the body. With this said, i got my first "sport bike" so to speak (always had custom bikes) it's a Honda VFR800, what i liked about it is the fact that i can add luggage if i need it 's a bit less hard on the body.
