What I DONT LIKE about NATS (as a webmaster)

I don't like having to download the banners for promotion as I could simply wget them directly from my server which is a lot quicker and less time consuming.

Banners on NATS systems should be distributed in a better fashion!!

:2 cents:

mrthumbs 02-16-2005 04:46 PM

ow are banners distributed now then?

TMM_John 02-16-2005 04:46 PM

Great idea in making a post on GFY about this instead of contacting us directly and offering a suggestion! :) (end sarcasm)

I'm confused as to exactly what you mean tho. What exactly would you change?

Yes. And people feel the need to "bring things to the boards" and post about it rather than actually contact the person they have an issue/problem/suggestion with etc.

He comes here and posts a thread called "What I DONT LIKE about NATS" to talk about how he thinks the banner download should be different. He's never contacted us or even attempted to from what I have seen.

People browsing the board see a topic like that it effects our product negatively. It's not the proper and correct way to do things.

John is one of the owners of NATS. Not a program running NATS (well, not ONLY a program running NATS) but actually NATS itself.

I am too btw.

About this topic: Its a nice idea, but we want to keep the banners inside the resellers area for hotlink protection purposes. I guess you could login using wget first, but that makes it complicated again, right? If the only thing you want is a page you can start wget on that would simply display all banners and its ok that you have to be logged in, let me know.

Basically, to be able to download the sponser site's banners remotely with programs like `wget' rather than having to login and download directly from my browser.

You can have still detect if an image is being hotlinked if it is outside of a `members only' area... Just allow them to be displayed from requests with no referrers?

As a program owner running NATS, I would rather keep the banners behind the login. If I wanted to grab them from the shell, I'd use CURL to login (set a cookie) and then just grab what you wanted. Either that or lynx. :)

MrJackMeHoff 02-16-2005 05:25 PM

Seems to me every program that uses nats converts worse than those who dont.. :2 cents:

Some people claim this, some people claim the opposite. It's hit or miss if your traffic will work for a program. If you feel something is broken give us the details and we're more than happy to take a look for you and see if there may be something that is not functioning properly in your case.

no offence, but you do enjoy all the positive threads on GFY and do not ask the people to send you an email instead. So you have to deal with negative threads also. Thats how it works.
Dont take this as an attack. :)

I'm not :) And I understand your point. But postive threads are posted in order to spread positive feedback. If a negative thread is posted that means it is meant to spread negative feedback. Positive feedback is something that should be spread for anyone who deserves it. Negative things should only be broadcast to the majority if other avenues are exhausted and it calls for. At least thats how I view it :)

(edit) I just reread that and it sounds a bit confusing. What I mean is someone should be praised in public, it causes no harm. But if you choose to criticize someone in public it better have a good reason behind it to be done in public. Could be just just how I think things should be done tho :)

Fucking makes me laugh... everytime someone says something bad or even remotly sideways...we allways get the "why did u bring this to the boards"

This is a webmaster board...if no one brings shit here...then it closes down. He didnt slam u... simply made a post to see if any else agreed with him...

Take a fucking pill or something

this is a negative thread? jesus dude, if banner placement in folders is the most negativity your getting right now and your STILL bitching, then you need to take a chill pill man....this could have been one of 1000 shaving, coding or something worse threads that started days worth of drama...but yet, someone brought up what they thought was an excellent point, and probably wanted more opinions on the matter, and now you are bitching about him being negative....

fuck dude, way to represent your company....next time, a nice dicussion and possible resolution would probably fit you better, instead of looking like an ass for crticizing him for posting something which really wasn't that negative at all

Take a fucking pill or something

and in all reality, it wasn't even that negative

way to represent a company

if I were program owners, i would put this representative on a leash and limit his access to the boards....and maybe require nats to hire some sort of PR person to deal with this type of shit...

Thats rediculous John. Take the good with the bad. If your program is solid, you shouldn't fear the negative so much.

On an unrelated note. Did you guys release the unencrypted link code methods yet?

TMM_John 02-16-2005 06:02 PM

I think you people are taking this a bit out of proportion. I did not get mad at him, I did not yell at him, I simply made a little bit of a joking sarcastic comment and put a smiley at the end indicating I was kidding around with him and asked him to further explain what he meant so we can help him.

The need of this board to have "drama" is getting to be a bit ridiculous. Do I think people should jump on the boards everytime they have a little problem with something? No. Thats why I made the comments I made. If people do so tho I won't get mad at them and I will help them as I started to do here before everyone decided to try to make some more "drama". I'm sorry if you disagree with my opinion on what should be and shouldn't be posted on a board and the method it is done, but we're each entitled to our opinions. Don't just assume tho that I am mad at the guy or something becuase I am in no way mad at him in the least.

Everyone here needs to take a chill pill and relax.

Sorry Bret, I saw it but it slipped my mind while I was typing the other reply.

A number of people are asking for them. Some things came up that had to be taken care of before them but they are a very high priority of ours (becuase many people are asking for them) and we hope to be releasing an update which will allow sponsor programs to offer them if they would like to very very soon (hopefully within a week or so).

andrej_NDC 02-16-2005 06:12 PM

This is more a suggestion thread than a negative thread = good exposure for NATS

I agree. It just hit me as being a negative thread the way the topic was posted with DONT LIKE capitalized and what not. It came off to me as a negative thread. Not a "bashing" thread but with a negative tone to it. When someone I don't know comes out of the blue and immediately takes a negative tone about something like that it rubs me wrong.

I realized he may not have meant it as a negative thread and it may have just been how it came out or how I interpretted it which is why I did not get angry with him and asked him to explain better what he means so that we can see if we can incorporate it.
