Its a good movie but you have to watch it 3 or 4 times to understand it and to catch everything the first time i thought it sucked but then after that the more i watched it the more i understood
Donnie Darko had the ability to time travel. The first time he got out of bed before the engine hit. He attempted to change things for the better, figured out the world would've been better off had he died, so went back in time and the engine came down on him. The events that happened when he avoided death stayed in the subconscious minds of the people he dealt with though, making them better people in a way, thus making the world a better place...
...if that makes sense...there really is no set in stone answer, other than the more I watch it, the more I dig it...

No, it's not just a dream. It's a little bit complicated, but it makes way more sense after you read this, which is a brief of the book Roberta Sparrow wrote (which she didn't, actually). By the way I don't think it's just a comedy, it's a movie which makes you think about it, and that's the purpose.
I've always interpreted it as he was killed by the engine and what we see is basically that instant between him being dead and being alive...kind of a "flashing before your eyes" type of thing....
