About DMOZ traffic...

I just want to know how much traffic do you get from Dmoz to a site that's listed in their index.
I know that other searchengins will list your site once it's been listed at Dmoz, but i want to know how much traffic sends Dmoz only.
and how long does it take to get listed there?

Dmoz itself doesn't send very much traffic. My sites in dmoz gets about 2-3 hits each daily.
You can't say how long it takes to get in dmoz, it depends on your sites category. For some categories in can take months and some only a few days.

eRock 12-01-2001 01:51 PM

And some of the categories don't even have a reviewer...so good luck w/ those!

As a DMOZ editor I must say this is not true. If a category doesnt have an editor, an edtitor from higher category still sees submitted sites and has an authority to edit them.

DMOZ has been crap for a long time.
They dont even answer e-mails about
advertising which basicly means the
site is dead.

People are buying domain names(E.G. ababei.com... to get listed higher in the letter A category) specialy for dmoz... so being listed at Dmoz it's got to be worth something!

I heard that it's a great place to start building your SE traffic!

3xGuru - DMOZ doesnt use Letter/Number ranking technology. Sites appear totally random.

DMOZ will help you get spidered, but that is about it. On the GOOD SIDE - the editors in the adult categories are not supposed to make judgements about your sites - like they do in all the other categories.

Usually they will accept your site if you follow the rules. Sometimes favortism and the like occurs. I recently submitted a VERY CLEAN story site - the editor looked at it within 6 hours of me submitting it, and it never made it to the listings.

In general, they will list clean sites, and it doesn't hurt you - so give it a shot.

Don't expect any real traffic from it though.

I applied to be an editor in 2 different
categories and sent 3 e-mails over a 1
month period about advertising. Thats
5 total e-mails and not one response.
http://dmoz.org/Adult/Image_Galleries/Movies/Members/ http://dmoz.org/Adult/Image_Gallerie..._Clips/Free/H/
The above category doesnt even have an editor so its not political problems.
..just nobody behind the wheel over there.

I figured they were just going out of
business. Even SE's that crawls other SE's
seem to be dropping DMOZ. Dogpile used to
index DMOZ before yahoo - now DMOZ is gone
from their ranks completely.

Chris R 12-01-2001 03:52 PM

AOL is the only decent source of DMOZ traffic.

There are some very good editors over there, but there are also some slimeballs. It is EXTREMELY political - read some of the tell alls from ex editors and he like (even taking into account their bias). I know lots of people who have applied to be editors. Most did get a rejection email. All were at least somewhat qualified.

It doesn't seem to matter if there is no editor, most tried to get in on those categories - same response.

Not in your search, but take a look here: http://dmoz.org/Adult/Image_Galleries/Hardcore/Free/A/

Check out the first link! Why do you think that webmaster bought aabaspalace.com? ... because in the directory at letter a he is the first. Dmoz lists your description(name of the site) alfabeticaly in his directory.
If you buy such a name you can use it in your description and get a higher listing(allthough your description may start with aabaspalace even if you're on other domain(I think)

I will not expect any real traffic, but being listed at Dmoz you get a higher ranking on other sites. It's very important to be listed there... someone on this board sad once that if you have a link to your site in a gallery you get 1 point in linkpopularity, but if you have a link to your site at Dmoz, you get 100 points in linkpopularity(at least Google counts this way)!

Google works on PageRank which is a type of link popularity. It does almost no good to be listed in DMOZ as the PageRank of the pages you are on are so far down that it doesn't matter much.

It does help for theming.

Almost all my traffic comes from Google. I am #1 on Google for teen sex, lesbian sex, porno, asian porn, sex stories, and a bunch of others. I know that lots of people believe what you have said, but it is a common misconception. People think the same thing about Yahoo. It doesn't hurt, but it won't help you much either. Trust me - I know Google like the back of my hand. I always try for a DMOZ listing, but if I don't get it - it won't matter much.

I know what you mean about the alphabetical categories - you are right for the categories themselves, but most people use the search. For SEO purposes - it is better to be listed on a page with LESS listings. This is because the "points" you get are the "points" of that page divided by the number of links on that page. That is a slight over simplification, but that is the way it works more or less.

If you want to see HOW MANY google points you have - you can use the google toolbar:
http://toolbar.google.com/

for more Google info - you can check out my page at:

If you look at the Adult Categories in DMOZ - you will see most of them are worthless - same with Yahoo. At least DMOZ doesn't cost $600 http://bbs.gofuckyourself.net/board/smile.gif

Well, I've submitted to some these categories thinking that & they never change or have been updated. That's my experiences at least...

Google is the only thing that has kept DMOZ from disappearing over the past few years.

Are you still going to link to the google page rank discrepancy chart off of there?

I was and still am editor for few adult categories. I even build up their adult index from zero for one country... But I gave up. There's too much reviewers who dosen't care anymore. I even receive spam from some editors who review my sites. The another story is if anyone is going to review your site. Ok, but Dmoz listings still are gold for SE strategies. Good luck for Dmoz.

NoCarrier 03-31-2003 10:39 AM

DMOZ is the most corrupted directory ever.

Most adult categories are "owned" by editors.

fnet 03-31-2003 12:36 PM

DMOZ is verrrrry slow right now.

I wonder if all the spider monkeys on this board know they can do a straight 205mb download of the odp, and work the data locally?

Probly not. Fuckin a.
