Server clusters
anyone know where i can get information on how to cluster linux servers? is it even possible?
|
ofcourse.
You can do it via hardware or software. Hardware clustering will cost you good amount of money... Read up on Rsync. |

no problem :winkwink:

nah im not sure
|
rsync can be used if your data doesn't update too often otherwise its
a pain. I'd suggest nfs on a raid5 server if you dont want to use a netapp. thats the storage part. for load balancing you can use a server with a program like pen or an apache2 with mod_proxy or mod_backhand... or squid if you wanna do caching... or.... the solutions are endless, google is your friend. |
I sure hope you work it out...

Check out beowoulf :-) thats a real supercomputer cluster.
Also search for MDI |
rsync is not a cluster, per se. Its a way of synchronizing servers in (near) real time. All my porn servers are synchronized with failover or load balancing across multiple servers using rsync.
Thats not the same as a cluster though. The disadvantage of clusters is expense and complexity. Also I prefer load balanced servers be at different hosting companies, something not usually possible with a cluster. You have to ask yourself if you really want a cluster - for most web servers load balanced replicated servers are often a better and cheaper solution. |
If you still need help about this matter you can contact me about this. We do nothing but building web clusters ;-)

We have perfected a linux software based cluster system based on ipvs, lvs and a reverse proxy system. It is a awesome setup that handles 100's of millions of hits a day on off the shelf servers
|
There are lots of possibilities. We're using EMIC and PolyServe software applications on RedHat ES 3. This is makes more sense on a large setup, but it provides a very scalable clustering solution.
|
load balancing applications/hardware is the key. then of course the data synchronisation.... or you can also read more about LVS (freeware)
|
load balancing with distrubuted DNS or round robin dns if you have to.
cheaper and for just highload traffic way better than a cluster... |
