Man... anything that has to do with the dentist hurts.

TORTOISE 02-15-2005 02:58 AM

Yep had mine done a few years ago,I didnt have them capped thou ..more like the ultra thin wafer veneers were stuck onto the front of my teeth with a like a special super glue (8 top /8 bottom)then the dentist smoothed off any rough edges ,took about 3 hrs and was totally painless ...as l hate dentists.....the result is a million dollar smile people notice staight away..well worth the effort.

hope that helps :thumbsup

Are you talking about cosmetic restoration of your teeth? I've had some done, most of it didn't hurt AT ALL, even though he said my gums would be sore for a couple of days. After the fifth session I did have some occasional bouts of sharp (nerve) pain but that's the only problem so far.

machinegunkelly 02-15-2005 02:57 PM

I got all my fronts capped last year , no pain at all .

Nice shiny new front teeth too :)

machinegunkelly 02-15-2005 03:00 PM

Actually , just thought to note something ,
My veneer on my left fang is coming off .. so its time for a repair .

Veneers can break and need to be changed sometimes .

unless your teeth are real bad ( mine were ) you may be able to go with a straigh resin fill on some , I did on a few and its pretty much the same as my veneers , except you may feel a slight edge here and there .

Cyndalie 02-15-2005 03:10 PM

How expensive are they?

MaDalton 02-15-2005 03:30 PM

look for a dentist that has a Cerec System and is a professional using that. It's a CAD/CAM machine for Inlays, Crowns und Veneers. They do a 3D pic of your tooth, construct the veneer on the screen and you can watch as it is milled. And you get it the same day - not weeks later. Cool stuff.

Tala 02-15-2005 03:35 PM

What's the cost on those? My teeth are horrible and desperately need something like that unless I want to go the denture route in My 30s.

thats what id like to know. id love to have it done but i heard its like $200 a tooth.

TORTOISE 02-15-2005 04:10 PM

yes its not cheap mine cost me $3000 total for the 8 top and 8 bottom but if your teeth are in a bad way you ll get a million dollar smile and people notice it ...i m not vain but my teeth were in a bad way ..and for a saleman i think it spoils the image with bad teeth.

:thumbsup

If there's one thing I know, it's dentistry. First of all, a cap and a veneer are two different things. As for price, if you know anyone paying $200/veneer, they're getting them extremely cheap. A realistic figure is more along the lines of $1,000/veneer - at least in the US (I know someone who got a roundhouse in Bulgaria for $500 - it would've cost him $12k here). One of my accounts charges his patients $1,600 per veneer. I won't even tell you what we charge him for them. It would make you sick knowing the markup percentage.

If the dentist is good, the pain should be relatively minor. The dentist basically shaves down the tooth and the veneer is just a thin shell that'll fit over it, bonded by permanent cement.

Veneers are only done on anterior teeth. The things machinegunkelly is talking about sounds like inlays or onlays, not veneers.

CAD/CAM technology is good. We use that ourselves on a couple of our products, but it's only as good as the dentist taking the impression.

collegegirlvids 02-15-2005 04:30 PM

I've had veneers.. nothing too painful... mine look great.. just make sure you have someone that is good =)

funny - i have been in that business for years. working for Siemens - Pelton&Crane is more known in the US which is a daughter company (or was at that time). And I sold that Cerec devices - was quite good myself in constructing inlays. :1orglaugh

I hate dentists, I hate going to the dentist, I hate the smell in the dentistry and everybody that works there. Last time I went to my dentist was 4 years ago.

Big Red Machine 02-15-2005 05:10 PM

I had my fronts done years ago ,it doesn't hurt
your mouth just your wallet

I'm not knocking the product. I was merely pointing out that it's only as good as what you've got to work with and it's certainly no fault of the CAD/CAM technology by any means. Because it's laser-scanned, dentists expect perfect restorations every time & that's not always the case. If a dentist wants a CAD/CAM product and his impression is shit (poor margins, material pulled away from the triple tray, etc) he's not going to get a 100% fit no matter how high-tech the equipment is.

A cap aka crown is a full tooth restoration (like if a tooth is severely decayed and a filling won't help). A veneer is basically a thin shell or sleeve that fits over the front of your tooth and is considered mostly cosmetic.

you are absolutely right - of course. although you don't need an impression with Cerec - you can take the right out of the mouth. but you need experience though for a good result.
