Excite May Disconnect Tonight
A U.S. federal bankruptcy judge ruled Friday that bankrupt service provider Excite@Home can cease service at midnight, as requested by creditors. Story to come.

The brewing conflict over the bankrupt ExciteAtHome's broadband network is best described as a daring game of chicken between corporate interests -- with the possible victims being not the corporations themselves but their millions of cable-modem subscribers.
Although experts say the odds are against it, a U.S. Bankruptcy Court judge in San Francisco could rule Friday that ExciteAtHome (ATHM) must shut down its network, leaving its 3.7 million cable-modem subscribers without their beloved high-speed connections.

If Judge Thomas Carlson does this, it would be at the behest of ExciteAtHome's creditors, who say that the shutdown threat will force AT&T (T)-- ExciteAtHome's largest shareholder -- to pay much more than what it recently offered for ExciteAtHome's network. The creditors contend that the $307 million that AT&T suggested is too paltry a sum, and it won't cover the millions they're owed by ExciteAtHome.

My cable provider whom switched over to @Home a year or so ago, went off their network two weeks ago because of the quality of service -- lack thereof. Still can't say I'm happy, because when my provider wasn't on @Home, they still sucked quite a bit. http://bbs.gofuckyourself.net/board/smile.gif

Does this mean every @home connection might be shut down? Or just excite@home? I'm on mediacom@home can someone clear this up for me.

Hmm,...Good question, I know I am on excite@home but It's not too bad, there is two internet connections here, one cable and one dsl so I'll have internet regardless.

But since excite@home is about to cease, I have started to spam the shit out of the newsgroups. I guess they can't boot me off there service since they are just about to not have one themsleves.

It looks like you would be included. Here is something from the article on it:

The ruling affects many of the nation's largest cable companies, including AT&T (T: Research, Estimates), Comcast Corp. (CMCSK: Research, Estimates) and Cox Communications Inc. (COX: Research, Estimates), that sell Internet access through @Home's network.

So you might be on the list. I got a letter from AT&T telling me that they may be able to switch me to a different network and I would still have a connection. Hopefully all goes well.

All @home connections would be gone.

The credits say they're losing more money every day.

This goes against my capitalist instincts but I think that 4 million high speed internet connections getting toasted deserves an intervention by the president to get these people to sit down at a table.

They did it for the railroads... The market will probably be screwed on Monday if these 4 million connections, including my own, go down. Think about it, likely that a vast majority of these 4mil are the most influential people doing business on the net. Not to mention, say goodbye to lots of online ordering before Xmas...

Anyone think I'm nuts?!
