I don't think favicons are that great.

like anything, useful or useless - depending on how you look at it. |
I think they look kinda nifty... much better in FireFox than just a blank page icon before the url.

One day I was trying to figure out why my 404 page was pulling a larger than usual load on my server (my 404 page has a lot of crap in it) and figured out that when someone was trying to get my favicon.ico the server was trying to return a full 404 page, so if anything, uploading a favicon.ico took care of that problem.

I've always used them :)

Aren't favicons purged if someone uses a cache cleaner? My threads from GFY I send to my desktop lose the middle finger icon and are replaced with a standard IE icon after I reboot and my cleaners run.
favicons are for the guys who have the spyware installed that are going to let your affiliate sales be stolen:glugglug |
I'm using them on every my site

it tells you how much of your traffic is book mark traffic. |
I use them :)
|
Another tip, it's easier to make the favicon in like 32x32 mode, then resizing it down to the standard favicon size.
|
Having a favicon is not a good way to try to see if you have bookmarkers for the last several years.. Modern browsers try to pull it up on entry whether bookmarked or not.
I think prior to IE 5.0 it was helpful, but not since then. I use them because I got sick of seeing all the failed attempts to retrieve them in my logs, lol. :) |
