Is English the best language?
 

It seems it's only a matter of time before English is the only language spoken on Earth. It's the only language I can speak, so I'm happy that it dominates.

For those of you that are multilingual, do you think English is the best language? It seems it has endless means of expression and it grows quickly and draws from almost every other language out there.

I doubt it

the most spoken language on earth is chinese. nice try though. french is also considered a common language among diplomats.

English is an easy language to learn, hence it's very spread throughout the western world...

Are there any countries that weren't former British colonies where english has become the main language?

I can't think of any

there are better languages out there where you can better express yourself... like russian, alot of usefull words in russian that just don't exist in english, and other langages as well i'm sure

English is a great 'utility' language. It's easy to absorb new concepts into it, and it is very widespread so there's a good chance someone wherever you are knows at least enough to be useful in communications. So, as a business language, English is probably one of the best if not the best.

In terms of detail and nuance, english is a poor contender. Many other languages allow for finer subtleties and concise shades of meaning. This is part of the reason why it's so difficult to translate non-english literature to english and why so much gets lost in translation.

I guess it depends on what your use is... if you want to order a bigmac anywhere in the world, chances are english will do the job. If you're trying to get laid, english may be a poor second choice. :thumbsup

Most of the sites on the net are in english and english is also the most spoken lang on the web so it does dominates... ;)

Chinese sucks as far as tech goes. it is very hard to type it. English is "the" second language of the world. I do not have experince with Russian but several Latin based languages lack the richness that English has.
