Will this industry ever become monopolized?
 

There seems to be a lot of consolidation in the past few years but there still isn't any real control of a few companies over the entire industry. There is still a lot of room for start ups and even newbies to get in (yes with difficulty).

The only real monopolies seem to be 3rd party billing companies. Many of the largest adult sites use 3rd party billing companies and their are only a handful of them. That seems to be where the parallels between online and offline business diverges. It would be like McDonald's using a 3rd party service to handle their billing.

I wonder if some companies will come to rule the market like an online Adult WalMart. I wonder if their will ever be new 3rd party billing companies.

Monopoly means only one provider of a service or good and I can't think of any at the moment in this industry. 3rd party billing is an oligopoly and hopefully won't turn to monopoly. I see so many new adult ventures they don't have reason of existence and I predict they'll fail through time. On the other hand I don't see big companies taking over everything; things looks pretty much balanced at the moment.

i doubt anyone could consolidate this industry with any success

I wouldn't say a monopoly, but this industry already has some "key players" controlling most of the action
