western digital drives appear to be a piece of crap

Until now I had only seen some people say to avoid them... now I've experienced it directly. I bought my wife a new computer (so I couldn't choose the brand) and after FDISK and FORMAT C: /U the fucking thing just clicks repeatedly when you power on, and the BIOS reports a drive error!

At least it's dying before I install everything, rather than quietly taking out her data in a month.

I'm going to ask for a different brand when they replace it. :321GFY

baddog 02-12-2005 02:38 AM

I always liked WD. and their warranty is honored for like 5 years or something (last I looked).

SplitInfinity 02-12-2005 02:41 AM

Western Digital drives suck. We refuse to use them AND also refuse to use IBM (now Hitachi) Deskstar drives. They WILL fail miserably.

Head clicking/clunking is a sure sign of a head crash.
If I can find them, I'll post a photo of what that looks like...
Basically the head ends up touching the surface of the disk and literally scrapes off the metallic coating leaving a see through area on the disk platter. When the head gets to that part, it doesnt know what to do
so the controller keeps pulling it back and forward in attempts to get a bearing on things...

Red Ezra 02-12-2005 02:43 AM

they are bad and have failed on me more than once

holy moly I can hear some clunking from my box
I better back up things right now
so , tell us what you would like to suggest ? Seagate is any good ?

arnette 02-12-2005 02:46 AM

i have a 120 and 2x 200gig in WD.

about 2-3 weeks ago one of the 200s crashed out on me, corrupted all my data, and the partition tables disapeared. This week the other 200 is starting to currupt data as well. Im never using WD again

Stamen 02-12-2005 02:50 AM

Back in the day WD used to make good drives, and all my Maxtor drives would crash and burn, now it's the exact opposite.

SplitInfinity 02-12-2005 02:50 AM

Maxtor or Seagate.
:-)

Photos coming now, I found them...
YOU WILL TRIP OUT WHEN YOU SEE HOW VULNERABLE YOUR DATA IS....

rowan 02-12-2005 02:54 AM

Actually, I just realised I've had experience with drives crashing before... 3 months ago one of my server drives started throwing up sector read errors. My host caught it and copied most of the data over to a new drive, so it wasn't a complete loss. It's the only time in the 4 years I've been leasing servers (currently have 5 operational) that a drive has crashed.

It was a Western Digital.

SplitInfinity 02-12-2005 02:55 AM

Another angle...

Where are the heads on the FUBAR drive? I'm curious to see what they look like. :)

X37375787 02-12-2005 02:56 AM

i've had bad experiences with WD before, but my maxtor drives seem to be very reliable

Could this be the same case with my laptop?
I have this Inspiron that clutters like motherfucker, then it eventually fails if I leave it on long enough. I just put it aside and use another lappie. But maybe it's something I can fix? (assuming the prob you described goes for laptops too) :(

SplitInfinity 02-12-2005 03:01 AM

The only economical way to fix this problem is to replace the hard drive.
Backup your data now EVERYONE. Learn from this. ;-)

Take it from us, we see colocation customers bite it all the time because they
think "ill backup when I get around to it" but that day never comes....
We backup for most of our customers, but some are either un-managed, co-located or they just wanna do it all theirselves.... No matter if you are managed or not, you need backups!!! Make local copies, put them in a bank safety deposit box and
sleep well at night. Backups of backups of backups. hell, store one at grandmas house for the heck of it.

Project-Shadow 02-12-2005 03:01 AM

WD died on me once... Maxtor died on me twice, I now do a monthly ghost of both my drives just to be on the safe side -_-'

guess it shows I have not had to buy a hdd in a few years

Theo 02-12-2005 03:11 AM

i agree with SplitInfinity, now im thinking of it all the failed disks of the past were WD (except a samsung)

SplitInfinity 02-12-2005 03:14 AM

Samsungs have been ok with me so far I think.. Their name does not stand out
and I know we use them from time to time... never really heard anything negative about them.

SplitInfinity 02-12-2005 03:17 AM

On the failed drive, these are the top and bottom platters. You can see the problem got to BOTH platters. Nothing is safe.

http://homepage.mac.com/suavementeho...D87CD911D9.jpg

SplitInfinity 02-12-2005 03:18 AM

Notice how the platter is basically made of a glass type material and coated with a mettalic coat... the head just scratches it right off the glass and the glass is now
100% clear where the head crashed.... see my finger though it?

still have a 20gb maxtor for many years,np at all. I'll better stick to them from now on

SplitInfinity 02-12-2005 03:33 AM

Yeah stick to them. I always use Maxtors without problems.

SplitInfinity 02-12-2005 03:43 AM

This thread would be un-informative without a hot chick passing by.....

VirtuMike 02-12-2005 04:48 AM

Oddly enough, I have had more maxtors go in the past two years than all other brands combined. I now only buy Western Digitals (and DeathStars on occasion). I wonder how Seagates are these days.

Evil Doer 02-12-2005 05:22 AM

I've had bad luck with WD aswell, bought 5 SATA drives at $200 a piece and 2 of them were functional. Atleast there is no problem RMA'ing them with the warranty and all.

DutchTeenCash 02-12-2005 05:29 AM

wd sucks, i had a few they all went down, one even due to temperature, maxtors all along here no problem at all

perfectodollars-gabrio 02-12-2005 07:41 AM

oddly enough, during the last years i had IBMs, maxtors and WDs and averagely they would all start doing crazy stuff after one year more or less.....could it be due to the KIND of work they do? a guy that works in a comp shop told me that if you do lots of video editing, then your hdd will be really stressed, 1 year of video editing work could be compared to 5 years of regular hdd's life....do you think that that was just plain BS or can be true?

tungsten 02-12-2005 08:16 AM

some just arent lucky with WD

Rui 02-12-2005 08:22 AM

Western Digital lost some of their momentum, but are far from beeing as shitty as you say...

Loki 02-12-2005 08:29 AM

first off Very cool thread, great pics as well.

2nd, I've used WD for many years and never had a prob with them, personaly I prefer Maxtor or Seagate, but I seem to have probs with Seagate drives when they get filled to the brim lol, (I do that alot) in fact not a month ago I lost my 80gig SG backup drive, no warning, no noises zip zero nadda. just booted up and it was gone, took it out, chip was fried :( took drive to data recovery pretty much useless. So now i'm sticking with Maxtor.

But hell I also swore by windows 98 when I had my cyber cafe open a few years back lol.

Western Digital drives suck
:thumbsup :thumbsup :thumbsup

I did have four (4) of'em laying on the floor by my comuter desk.... Just 2 remind me how much they sucked.

All four (4) of'em went out.

Tom_PM 02-12-2005 09:22 AM

Never had a problem with the 10 or 12 WD drives I've had/still have in use.

My original 10MEG, full height MFM drive that I bought second-hand for about $150 in 1990 or so is the only drive I've had die before I upgraded (I lost some Pascal and C programs). Although drives are rated MTBF, I've been lucky.

My host backs up my servers each night, so thats a plus..

*knock on wood* :)

SplitInfinity, you need to buy some clockworks now and build yourself a new shop clock outta that trashed disk and dead heads! :D

tony286 02-12-2005 09:26 AM

Now I had problems with maxtor but my wd's have worked no problem. Could it be Im using their newer sata's? I wonder

LadyMischief 02-12-2005 09:26 AM

They suck, but their warrenties are good. Maxtor is probably a better choice though.
