Satellite internet connections...
Anyone here use one or know someone who does?
I can't deal with my dialup anymore and cable or DSL is completely unavailable. So it's between ISDN and satellite. Any experiences you have would be appreciated. http://bbs.gofuckyourself.net/board/smile.gif Thanks |
Downloads pretty good, dsl speeds. Not 1.5 meg dsl... but around 200k down. Amazing compared to a dialup. Upload is shit. And crappy weather can disrupt your service. I am referring to DirecPC. Your mileage may vary on other providers. |
We were stuck in an area without dsl or cable, so I went ahead and got direcPC, it got the job done. You will get some signal problems now and then, but it still beats out dial-up. Some of the newer satellite services provide both up and down stream connections, the one we had uploaded via the phone lines, which was a pain in the ass

Yea. I heard the weather causes problems. Is it a light sprinkle that screws things up, or does it have to be seriously raining? If an overcoast sky and a little drizzle will kill it this is gonna suck.
Yea. The one I'm looking at is two way so I don't need the modem for uploading. That was one of my big concerns. |

Sometimes it would be a clear day yet i would have a low signal or no signal! Most of the time it would be getting low signals when its clowdy or raining/snowing, but sometimes it would just be low on clear days for some reason. |
I got a so called T1 satellite connection one time, the ISP was my neighbor. Man, that thing was ssssllloooowwwww.
This was about 3-4 years ago, I don't know if the technology has improved since then.. but it probably has http://bbs.gofuckyourself.net/board/wink.gif |
i have starband's 380 piece of crap now, had direc pc's last year. http://bbs.gofuckyourself.net/board/biggrin.gif
it does beat dial up, but it's pretty bad overall. cloudy days mean slow everything, and if it's raining or snowing hard just shut everything off. it's expensive but for surfing purposes (approving galleries ect)it is fine. forget trying to upload anything in under 4 hours, hehehe. my house in on a hill, with direct southern exposure to the satellite, you can't get a better site. dsl supposed to be available in my area literally any day now, as soon as it is i am pulling this dish down too and junking it along with direc pc's dish. between direc pc and starband i can honestly say starband is much much better. i have used them both for over a year each, and i cannot even begin to tell you how badly direc pc's connections were....and their tech support.....and getting anyone out to re-align your dish (which does need to be done every 6-8 months as maintenance). hope i was able to help. http://bbs.gofuckyourself.net/board/smile.gif ------------------ make 70% sending your traffic to a real amateur babe-a-roni |

Satellite internet blows cock Give it another 2 years to develop. Maybe then the tree's swaying or some light rain won't shut the mother fucker down. ------------------ -- Digital Pimp Family -- |
I've read only bad review about satellite -- if you go that route -- do a lot of research -- and make sure you understand how the shit works so your dish isn't pointed at a satellite that's overloaded... (which seems to be very common) -- maybe look into microwave.
