My Mom needs help, serious thread.

Hey everyone - this is not a donation thread, I'm just looking for advice or a link.
My mom is on crutches and can't get around too much. She's been living with friends and family for almost 4 years now, but she just got approved for housing assistance and general relief, which will be her only source of income right now. Hopefully SSI will come through, but in the meantime she will have no extra income. I've been sending her cash when she needs it, but the reality is she is a proud woman and her disability easts at her pride, much less taking money from me...

Does anybody know of a legitimate work from home thing she can do, like stuffing envelopes or something like that, so she can earn some cash? I have heard about things like that for years of course, but I'd like to hear of some that you or someone you know has had experience with.

Post away!

good luck and a bump for you

I think those medical transcriptionist jobs are real. if she has a computer.

ssp 02-10-2005 10:48 AM

Perhaps she could apply for a job as a telephone operator somewhere? I wouldn't really know right away. But good luck!

If that's something she can do at home it's a definate option, nothing wrong with her yapper :winkwink: - got any details on that?

Really, I could spend all day researching this subject and come up with some viable options, but this is my mom I'm talking about here, you know? I am looking for a referel to a business or company that is verifiably legitimate.

No computer experience, but I can get her one no problem if it's something that doesn't require too much "outside the box" thinking... she's pretty set in her ways. Do you know of any companies?

I wouldn't be able to give you any links because I don't live in the states. But perhaps, you could check your local newspaper too, to see if there are any interesting ads there.

I figured I'd get at least one of those here :D

One of the problems I have with this situation is I live 2400 miles away from her, so anything I set up for her has to be either online or over the phone.

emthree 02-10-2005 11:31 AM

Seamstress?
Babysitter (older kids)
Housesitter?
Maybe some page content work? (textual)

I really dont know. If it was that easy, most of us and our fams would allready be doing it.
GL to you guys

No, I was watching some crappy ass reality show a while back and someone on it was a work at home medical transcriptionist.

Dig around here, you might find some useful info

Is your mother crafty at all? There are quite a few companies that have people make bead bracelets and whatnot on a commissioned per-piece basis, and crafty people can really make a good living from it. Some require an initial investment in materials (maybe $50), but the potential to earn is nice, and it's doing something that's fun. Check your local newspaper out, places like that are all over the place. Generally they run under the work-from-home or business opportunities sections.

somthing you might want to do is go to the employment office. A lot of them offer free training for displaced and disabled workers that would allow her to learn a new skill that she can physically handle and then help her find a job when she is done. They don't charge for this. My mom was going to do this and then got really sick and her eyesight went to hell so it would be very hard for her to do any job now. She is on SSI, but like your mom, she is old-school and proud and took a while to adjust because she didn't want people's help. So you might call the employment office or the social security/disability office and see what they say.

just a thouht, hope things work out for her.

Thanks Babagirls :)

Really, she's ecstatic about finally getting back into a place of her own, you'd think she just won the lottery. I'd take her to theunemployment office, but that takes a few trips back and forth usually, and I am halfway across the country so it's not like I could just fly out there and do it, I have responsibilities here.

The ebay idea is great, and I don't want to get too involved with this - but that requires creativity and drive to make something like that work. She's been down on her luck for so long she doens't have the mental fortitude to make that work right now.

So, my plan is to get her ANYTHING to do, as long as the comppany pays her, get a few bucks in her pocket, let her become a productive person and realize her personal potential again, and then get her hooked up with an ebay business or something similar. I have help her pull herself out of the mental rut she is in first though.
